Guest guest
I'm having a really hard time. I have dreaded anytime gets sick, for fear of failure of getting him to take his meds. But I wasn't worried about Pro Efa, loves pudding, so I thought I'd just mix it in there, problem solved like many of you do. Han't -ah, wouldn't eat it. So I tried juice, very strongly mixed, nope wouldn't drink. I waited all day thinking he has to drink sometime. But he didn't want it. I yelled at him, making him drink it. He sipped on it a little bit. Now I'm worried any suggestions? I think I might just put it on a spoon and yell at him until he takes it. Shilo mother of 4.5 and Preston 15months (perfectly willing to take any medicine I give him.)
Guest guest
I would not yell. Take a medicine syringe and squirt the fish oil in to the back of his throat while he is lying on his back on the floor. My pediatrician-father showed me a great " hold " : someone sits behind his head and hold his arms up over his head while is laying on the ground. Brutal, I know. However, yelling isn't much better! Maybe after a few times of the forced way he'll cooperate? What about in peanut or other nut butters? Perhaps the greasiness is what he is alerted by... nut butters are oily to begin with. If he eats pasta, you can drizzle it over the noodles as long as you know he will be eating it all. I've hidden icky meds in a spoonful of Hershey's chocolate syrup before, too. I don't have many suggestions. I am one of the lucky ones whose kids take meds off of the spoon. God gave me ONE break with Ian!!! Pam > I'm having a really hard time. Guest guest
I know its not perfect, but I used a lot of Hersey''s chocolate sryup to an increaseingly larger amount of EFA. Patience is important. We worked toward acheived amount over months.
Guest guest
Hi um - have you tasted it yourself? If you are going to try to get him to take it, it is going to be much easier if you know what the taste is and what is most likely to conceal it.Yelling at him may get him to comply but he will not see this supplement as a good thing which is going to make life harder in the long term.Even though Charlie has more severe issues than many on this board I have never concealed his supplements (don't do 'meds')as he has to trust me and he has to trust food. A child who already restricts his diet can't start to be suspicious of the few foods he will eat. I show him the supplement and show him as best i can that it will help his tummy or his head or whatever. I found the taste sat fairly well in cranberry juice whereas it seemed to jar when put with any others. Charlie will eat it well mixed into a vanilla pudding but spots it in any other flavours. The easiest way to cover it for all of us seems to be spread on a rice cake with a set honey- like manuka. ( i find that whilst it will mix in with peanut butter it also 'fights' with rather than concealing the flavour).i also invested in time and started with just a squirt rather than a whole capsule until he acepted thchange in flavour then increased slowly. I understand your frustration but even when Charlie was very severe and had to be treated in the simplest, most basic way to try and get him to co-operate with anything from getting dreassed to getting in the car I cannotthink of one single thing that we managed to teach him or gain his hilp or compliance upon by yelling at him. Not saying I didn't do it - just saying that long term it didn't work even once. Yelling is something we do -of course we are human- but I don't think it should be a strategy. If I came into your house every day and yelled at you until you did the washing up you may well do it but I don't think you would do it willingly and I don't think it would make you like me very much. If you are still struggling the enzyme and autism board has lots of ways to get enzymes into " tricky " kids - might be worth looking through there.
