Guest guest
, I'm sorry to hear about your problems, and I hope it will turn out OK. When you say you had a revision in Dec. 2001, what kind of revision operation was that? And who is your doctor, if I may ask. Guest guest
Hi . I had the socket (acetabular component) replaced with a bigger one. Guest guest
Hi So sorry to hear your news. It must be so frustrating when you have a perfectly good BHR on the other side. I guess your notes didn't give you any idea why the dislocation happened. I really don't know what to suggest to you other than, if you're not happy with your doctor at the hospital, you could possibly find somebody more experienced in this sort of bone condition and take a second opinion. Two heads are better than one and all that. Also if this condition has a better chance of being treated successfully in the early stages it may be better to find somebody sooner rather than later. I wish you all the luck in the world... don't sit back and TRUST be proactive. Take care Arlene

First of all what is your history, as I am not familiar with your story. Also where are you from. I am having my op at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, hopefully within the next few months. Hi . Guest guest
Hi Gazza Man, I really feel for you, you seem to be just about the only surface-hippy on this board that really grabbed the sh*t end of the resurfacing stick - first the dislocation, almost unique, then this heterotopic ossification thing! It seems incredible that it has formed to quickly, particularly as you were opened up again after the dislocation. 's site mentions the precautions that his surgeon took to avoid the formation of heterotopic bone when he had his op. at JRI. I was never told that I was being given any particular treatment for this, but trusted my surgeon, who is supposed to be about the best in the UK - I am determined to ask about the subject on my next follow- up. Try to keep your spirits up, you'll get sorted eventually, I'm sure Terry H > Right BHR May 2nd 2001. > Left BHR November 14th 2001. > Left revision December 13th 2001. > Hi folks. Guest guest
Hi , good luck with your upcoming surgery. I am from Middlesbrough, just up the road from the Freeman. I am 36 years old, and suffered with my hips ( dysplacia )for over ten years,,,,,until i heard about the BHR. I'll give you the message numbers with my story, then you can read them at your leisure. 2002. 2079. 4035. 4155. 4392. 4400. 4542. 5079. It went from elation with my first BHR op, to..... well you'll see for yourself, not so pleased with the left side BHR. I have no qualms about the product itself. I believe in it 100%. Maybe my choice of DR was wrong. Although saying that, I had'nt a choice with getting it done for free on the NHS. Beggars can't be choosers so to speak. You HAVE made the right choice, and everything will be fine for you i'm sure. Maybe i was just unlucky? Take care, and mail me anytime if you want anything. > > > Right BHR May 2nd 2001. > > > Left BHR November 14th 2001. > > > Left revision December 13th 2001. > > > Hi folks. Guest guest
Hi Gazza, Good to hear from you again, I feel real sorry for you that it isn't the news we like to hear. But remember the saying " Luck wouldn't be at your side forever " , it is the same for the opposite " Bad-luck wouldn't be at your side forever either !!! " . Three-times bad luck is enough, and ss Richie said it's about time for the fat lady to show up again singing for you. Pre-op, I've had extensive discussions with Dr.De Smet about Heterotopic bone formation, because I'm at special risk for developing this bone tissue around the prosthesis (Anklylosing Spondilitis patients are..). That's why De Smet prescribed, next to the normal 3 weeks Indomethacine medication (indeed direct after surgery), also a radiation therapy (one time 700 RAD doses one day for or after surgery - it seems that a one time higher level doses gives a Knock-Out to the HO-formation process, and works far better as multiple lower doses sessions). De Smet also told that in case severe HO bone has been formed around the prosthesis, it can only removed by surgery. However they wait for one year before removal - if you do it to soon, there is a chance for reoccurrence. So Gazza, take care, and if the fat lady wouldn't show up soon, we, as group, are going to sing for you !!!! - although, I doubt if that'll make you happy ??!!. Keep on posting. Update on me and dislocation .... A large Heterotopic bone formation has occured at the sides of my revised hip socket (acetabular component). Its classified on the " r Scale " as being stage 2 to 3. (that was in February) ..... He has given me a course of Indomethacin tablets to try and disperse the bone. >From what I have read up on the net, it has to be caught early for these to work. It they dont, the bone will have to be removed surgically. This will be followed by radiation treatment. .... I asked about Physio Therapy and he said that it would'nt help at all. It explains why my recovery has seemed slow, and why it seems so painful.

Guest guest
Well another development. I have been taken off the Indomethacin tablets by my local doctor. They disagree with me big time. I have spent a lot of this last week on the toilet lol. I don't know how significant this is, but he replaced them with Vioxx. I'll give these a try, but whether they will have the same effect dispersing the heterotropic bone is another matter. He seems to think they will do the same job. Any input is appreciated. Cheerio for now. Gaz > Right BHR May 2nd 2001. > Left BHR November 14th 2001. > Left revision December 13th 2001. > Hi folks.
