I too know about walking and the dogs you meet on the way. For quite awhile I

walked every morning with my dog. I finally had to walk with the dog on the

leash and a big stick for protection from other dogs coming at us. I did not

ever use the stick on a dog. But, if a viscous dog attacked me I would. We had

even a golden retriever attack my dog. Then the owner came running out. It

finally was just not worth the walk. G

I have considered carrying a big stick or pepper spray, but if a large dog

attacks, that may not be enough. The dog that came after me charged from

behind. Fortunately it was content to bite me on the leg and savage my hat

that fell off in the attack and I was able to back away. I don't know what

would have happened if the dog had gotten me down on the ground. I had

visions of becoming another Diane Whipple.

I live in a small town with a very strict and enforced leash law. In the

summer I walk 2 or 3 miles a day with my dogs, and have never had this

problem (knocking wood!) but I am careful where I walk, too, I mostly walk a

" commercial " area, starting with the main street of our town, then to a

lake, and along the lakeshore, then into a good neighborhood. My dogs are

small and I have often thought of how I could protect them and myself if a

big dog got after us. I should probably carry a stick, but I can picture me

with two dogs and a stick and trying to manage it all. Chaos all around.

Does your town have a walking trail in a park? Mine does and dogs are there

on leash only.

When I can't walk outside, I just miss it so, like now in subzero weather.

Walking indoors, or on a machine wouldn't do it for me. So I will just

continue to take my chances!

Yes, we had a park with the walking sidewalk but round and round is fairly

boring. We used to walk the neighborhood. I would take the stick now wherever I

walked.

I have moved and where I live now, everyone carries guns. Not kidding. We are in

the wild. Sometimes I walk the circle on my property but should carry a stick

there too. Wild animals up here. I do not really go out walking here but the

neighbors do. So far I am more afraid of the gun than the wild. G
