I used Zonegran for about 5 months. The pain doctor started me at

100 mg and had me increase by 100 mg each week until I reached 300.

I felt better quickly the second week at 200, waited 2 weeks to

increase it because I was traveling and didn't want more side

effects. At 300 I no longer got burning. I had other problems--

contact pain and back and buttock pain, but the Zonegran definitely

helped the vulvodynia. The side effect for me were feeling a bit

jittery and wonky, and a little bit nauseated. Those went away, but

I lost too much weight because the stuff changes the way some foods

taste and suppresses your appetite. Sweet things tasted awful--

chocolate tasted like dirt. There were other things I couldn't eat,

also, and I never felt like eating very much. I went to 97lbs and

everyone wondered if I had cancer or something. Be aware that

Zonegran also causes kidney stones in 10% of people who take it.

Drink lots of water.

I decided to go off of it before I lost more weight. I went on

neurontin, which has very few side effects for me, but doesn't seem

to work as well. I'm up to 1600 mg.

: you know what? I wonder if the fact that chocolate tasted like dirt and that sweets were awful for you was part of what helped you. hmmmmm that old SUGAR monster. Do you eat much chocolate now and sweets? Do you get the burning still while on your neurontin? hugs, Lou

Sweet things tasted awful--chocolate tasted like dirt.

SummaryVulvar pain is a complex disorder that is frequently frustrating to both practitioner and patient. It can be a difficult process to treat. Improvement may take weeks to months. Spontaneous remission of symptoms has occurred in some women, while with others, multiple attempts with medical management have proven unsuccessful in relieving 100% of the symptoms. The treatment of vulvar pain is confounded by the fact that the cause is unknown in a great majority of cases. It is important to recognize that rapid resolution of symptomatic vulvar pain is unusual even with appropriate therapy. Additionally, no single treatment program is successful in all women. Concurrent emotional and psychological support can be invaluable.Hope K. Haefner, M.D.Director, The University of Michigan Center for Vulvar DiseasesAnn Arbor, Michigan
