Guest guest
I've only recently heard of a connection, but I had the PF symptoms before any GERD symptoms, so I don't know which one I had first. Guest guest
Sandie, My understanding is that the acid backs up into the lungs and can cause lung scarring. Guest guest
The purple pill is that the " Todays purple pill " isnt that funny, did you know that both were made by the same company? ANd it was patent issue is how they got into that mess. I cant live without my pills either but I just wonder how many doctors every go and order the full tests on any of us to actually really treat what we have or they just assume thats it and treat it? Guest guest
Yep that is my understanding but you know all the years I have had GERD which I believe is about 10 now I never looked it up or read anything about it, they just made it sound like no big deal. Amazing what you find when you start paying attention. I research my other drugs and diseases but who would have thought GERD could do all that? Not me! Guest guest
Gerd is a lifetime issue from the day you find out you have it. If you find you're still having symptoms in spite of the meds, get to your gastrointologist. I would think an upper endoscopy could be called for to see any damage being caused. In fact, I can't imagine diagnosing GERD and not doing one. (I've had 4 so far). Certainly Barrett's is to be looked out for. Barrett's itself isn't the problem. The issue is that it is often a precursor to cancer. Surprised Protonix is working for you when nothing else did because its generally considered the worst by the gastrolintologists. It's used by hospitals only because its given to them for free. Some of us are on higher dosages than normal, such as 80 mg a day of Nexium (which for most can be accomplished as easily if costs becomes an issue with 40 mg a day of Prilosec OTC). Look into elevating the head of your bed. The Mattress Genie is the least expensive way I know except for the simple one which is to put the headboard on blocks. As to GERD causing PF or PF causing GERD or both being caused by the same thing, who knows. What we do know is that a lot of us had GERD Before our PF diagnosis and a lot more get it after. > > I knew that there were a lot of people with PF that have GERD but I > didnt know that GERD could cause PF did anyone else know of this? Guest guest
Expanding further on that, often with GERD you also end up with a weakened lower esophagus sphincter. So, now you have the acid with nothing strong enough to hold it down at all. So, now it has free reign. Thats another reason for endoscopies and even potentially a motility study, although thats not a fun one. Not dangerous or anything, just swallowing this bulb with a hose attached that they put in your nose and you have to swallow it all the way down to your stomach. And, of course, my esophagus and swallowing was so messed up it took eight tries to get it down (techs couldn't but doctor did on first try). > I knew that there were a lot of people with PF that have GERD but I > didnt know that GERD could cause PF did anyone else know of this? Guest guest
Oh Bruce that doesnt sound at all like fun. Did you actually have those tests? Did they recommend them or did you push for them? They call a lot of these symptoms that of extraesophageal manifestation now how many doctors dont take that into consideration I wonder? Guest guest
Oh I tried the other drugs, rantadine (zantax), nexium, prevacid, prilosec, my insurance through a bif huge fit back when protonix was the most expensive and wouldnt cover it so they had to go back to the drawing board, and start at the bottom, I was sure I was dieing then. So its something I have never done without and I ahve been taking double dosing 80mg of it a day (one at night and one in the morning) I have been sleeping with my head elevated only because I cant breath I have a cold/sinus whatever the heck it is and cant breath. I dont have a gastrolintologists I think I went to one many years ago but not sure for what that was for it might have been for GERD but I dont think so. Not a very good one if I recall correctly Guess I will have to go back and look that one up. Never been referred for an ENdo or any of that. I guess I have to get demanding now. Guest guest
The endoscopies were all called for due to various times and degrees of stomach and esophagus problems. The motility test was because I was having great difficulty in swallowing and if I ate and didn't lay down (stood up and walked around) then I would have a serious impulse to cough it up. In addition to the weak lower sphincter, I have a very tight upper one, sometimes called Globus. The solution for it was actually quite surprising. With each meal I take a very small dosage of valium. It actually relaxes the muscles of the upper esophagus. I had been tortured by the problem for over a month and the first meal with the valium everything was fine. The fact that the muscles and upper sphincter were tight wasn't particularly surprising I guess as my neck and shoulder muscles are very tight always (I hold some records at my physical therapists office in terms of pain and tightness and pain tolerance). lol. But for now all appears fine. 80 mg Nexium. Valium for eating. And now just got to get some people over to put my Mattress Genie under my mattress. I guess upper endoscopies and the motility study sound invasive in that they're sticking cameras and tubes deep down inside you but they aren't doing anything risky or truly invasive while doing so. If they do see polyps of course, they will grab samples or even remove them. But normally polpys are more likely when they're going in from the other end. I've had 4 or 5 colonoscopies or lower endoscopies too. For anyone who is 50 or older and hasn't, GET ONE NOW!!!!!!!!! If I hadn't had mine in 2005, I wouldn't probably be worrying about IPF now, but instead colon cancer, as I did after it have a colon resection to remove a precancerous tumor (note...precancerous always turn into cancer if not found and removed) and I've been free of any tumors or anything since then. Also my colon resection was done laparscopically thanks to the expertise here so my recovery was so mild compared to traditional. Instead of a 16 inch cut, my longest was about 4 inches as it just had to be big enough for 's (my surgeon) hand to fit through....lol All I can say is both upper and lower endoscopies (in spite of having to cleanse your system before the lower) can show so much and are really easy procedures. Also, I asked my pulmonologist about them in the future and he said no problem, I should just be on oxygen when they were being performed. > > > I knew that there were a lot of people with PF that > have > > GERD but I > > > didnt know that GERD could cause PF did anyone else know of this? > I > > > have been putting a list of all my symptoms (dont you love that > > word) > > > together for todays doctor appt. Guest guest
I had a colonoscopy about 4-5 years ago. My grandfather died of colon cancer well had colon cancer which spread to his lungs and that killed him. I didnt think it was bad at all and I am not even 40 and had that procedure people dont realize the worst part is the cleansing part because that stuff tastes awful! I said at the time well at least I have a good colon! Guest guest
Well, to me I get lemon/lime and the cleansing stuff itself isn't so bad at the start. It's having to drink so much of it. Guest guest
Yes, they think that an initial lung injury could start the overreaction of the immune system & that one of the injuries is GERD...another one they're looking at is the connection between sinus trouble & PF..'post-nasal drip' over many years is thought to be another possible trigger injury! I don't have GERDS but I've always had allergic rhinitis that I've never had properly treated 'cos I just ignored it! I've used the odd spray but always ditched them after awhile... Interesting hey! in Oz>> I knew that there were a lot of people with PF that have GERD but I > didnt know that GERD could cause PF did anyone else know of this? Guest guest
Yes, look at how many of us did grow up with allergies or even asthma. Then, an interesting question. Is the frequency of PF increasing or is it just being recognized more? If its increasing, among those things we consider possible causes which of those are increasing? One thing I haven't seen is a comparison of the frequency in the US versus other countries. I do know that some countries haven't even recognized it but 10-12 years. However, there is so much information to be gathered to give us clues. I personally believe we'll come up with a treatment long before we figure out the causes. > > > > I knew that there were a lot of people with PF that have GERD but I > > didnt know that GERD could cause PF did anyone else know of this? MNext time I have to have this done I will ask about the miralax. diana nsip ray2002 canton ohioBruce Moreland wrote: Gerd is a lifetime issue from the day you find out you have it. Guest guest
VEry , in may I was in the hospital with appartently a major sinus infection which turned into cellulitus. The u of m dr's said I have sinus disease first I had ever heard of it and in fact when I was in the hospital in May, I said I have never had a sinus infection, they said well you have sinus disease and they could prove it with all my CT's. Totally weird how things relate back.... Sandie > > > > I knew that there were a lot of people with PF that have GERD but I > > didnt know that GERD could cause PF did anyone else know of this?
