Guest guest
Hi, i've had OA of the right hip for the last 14 years (otherwise healthy). the pain has become increasingly unbearable and i'm gearing up to fight [Aetna] to have this procedure done by the end of summer. i've been reading some of your postings and everything is so encouraging and imformative. i have a pretty clear idea of what to expect pre- and post-op (very reassuring for a control freak like myself). does anyone still have limping post-op? what are the physical limitations after 3 mos.? 12 mos? is the difference in leg length corrected with BHR? also, i'd really appreciate any links to actual surgery pictures/videos. thanks a bunches for creating and supporting this group take care, Ola
Guest guest
What caused your OA at such a young age Ola??? I thought I was young at 37. We have no idea what caused my advanced OA at such an age. I did have a traumatic knee injury and had a total knee replacement in 99 at age 35 so the years of altered weight bearing probably played a role. GOOD LUCK and keep us posted. I am jsut starting to check into this procedure. Guest guest
Contact Batts...get him on activejoints.com. He can probably get you a CD of the op. It's pretty interesting. I watched it 3 times before I had mine done. My wife thinks I'm a bit ghoulish. Oh well. 26 year-old female BHR candidate Hi, i've had OA of the right hip for the last 14 years (otherwise healthy). the pain has become increasingly unbearable and i'm gearing up to fight [Aetna] to have this procedure done by the end of summer. i've been reading some of your postings and everything is so encouraging and imformative. i have a pretty clear idea of what to expect pre- and post-op (very reassuring for a control freak like myself). does anyone still have limping post-op? what are the physical limitations after 3 mos.? 12 mos? is the difference in leg length corrected with BHR? also, i'd really appreciate any links to actual surgery pictures/videos. thanks a bunches for creating and supporting this group take care, Ola

This is the one question you asked that I can answer: Yes, after resurfacing, I still limped. The underlying cause for my hip problem was congenital hip dysplasia, so I was probably worse off than most -- I had to use a cane for a couple years preop (had surgery at the age of 50). I was on crutches for 6-7 weeks after surgery; then I had to use a cane until I didn't limp anymore. I went through a few weeks of physical therapy, which helped some, and then, at my own insistence, I went through a few weeks of deep-tissue massage, and _that_ is what made the difference for me. After about 4 sessions of that, I was able to stop limping and walk normally. The timetable was quite long: I had my surgery on Jan. 27, 2000, and I ended the massage therapy sometime around late May-early June, so there was a period of about 4+ months when I was limping/gimping around postop. Best wishes, --Louise
Guest guest
Ola---First off " for a control freak like " yourself, don't talk with your insurance company first, talk to a surgeon. I think you'll read in these pages that those don't let the surgeon's insurance coordinator do the talking (they know how)are the ones who have had most of the troubles, although sometimes even when they do let someone else handle it there are problems. I think most here will agree to leave it in their hands. I found a website that has downloadable videos, viewable on computer. The site has both a hi-res and low-res version of a BHR procedure it will show an abbreviated version. You can find it at this URL http://freeserve.medicdirect.co.uk/videos/default.ihtml?pid=873 & step=4 Like Buzz said, Batts has videos available, so does Medical on their website but it is a hemi-resurfacing with the Conserve device. Its as graphic as you'd want. It is the same procedure as the Conserve Plus except they leave the cartilage in the acetabulum instead of replacing it with a bone ingrowth cup. Another part that may vary is that the video is Dr Amstutz at JRI using the Posterio Lateral approach which may be a little more invasive on muscle tissue than the Anterio Lateral approach. (see other discussions above)Some like Dr Mont do the Ant Lat, many others here do Post lat. There has been some head knocking in the past on that. You're here so you are on the right track. Keep up the good work.
