Topical corticosteroids are among the most ubiquitous drugs in dermatology. While their potential for HPA axis suppression, especially in children, has long been recognized, the issue has resurfaced recently. The Pediatric Subcommittee of the Anti-Infective Drugs Advisory Committee recently convened and recommended a risk management plan for topical corticosteroids and their adverse effects on suppression of the HPA-axis in pediatric patients.The Subcommittee also recommended elements of a risk management plan and long-term post marketing studies for the topical immunomodulators pimecrolimus and tacrolimus.
