Hi

I am curious what made the teacher think Jadd had CAPD? The reason I ask is

that recently a friend of mine asked me if anyone had ever mentioned that

with even though he is still young to diagnos. will be 6 next

month, so I guess it would be still to early to test?? She mentioned that I

should read a book titled " Like Sound Through Water. " I haven't had a

chance to check it out. I don't know too much about it, but thought I would

look into it. He currently isn't in private speech therapy, so I can't ask

her. Well better run, I am making more typo's than accurate typing. This

week is spring break here & I can't wait to relax. Have a great week

all...

Can I jump in here?

was officially diagnosed APD Jan this year - pretty much on her 6th

birthday .....the SLP ( & we are lucky enough to have the Principal SLP for

my borough) reviewed for a 6 week period previously specifically to

target a language disorder that was outside her oral & verbal dyspraxia.

I think that there is great hesitation generally to diagnose earlier than

this age is true. Similarly when was around 3 & the diagnosis of verbal

& oral dysprax. being definately confirmed then & not younger ( & therefore

not just language delay).

Personally, I wanted this diagnosis earlier - be it APD or whatever - I

really thought something was adrift by last summer ( she'd be 5.6 then).

Also she definately seemed to be an out & out visual learner

At the end of the day when you ask a child a question, any question, and

they seem to consistantly answer back inappropriately - enough times - then

looking at the APD angle seems common sense to me. Particulary if you have

a child who's regarded as intelligent by all, reading better than her peers

plus with age appropriate numeracy skills to match .

Anyway that's how we've been dealt with here in the UK.

Gin & 6.2 (verb & oral Dysprax + motor + residual dsi + APD )

Tammy,

When Lindsey was in kindergarten, the teacher wrote me from her vacation. She

said she was reading a book called " Like sound through water " and the boy was

just like Lindsey. She was so excited that she figured out what was wrong with

her:)

I read the book and was a little disturbed that she saw Lindsey like that! The

boy was quite involved.

Lindsey was tested by an audiologist at 5.11 and was found to have CAPD in one

ear. He said it could very well be a maturity thing at that point, and at her

next test she might have improved.

We go to Shands BTW hopefully soon and this will be one of the test they will do

I think.

Here I've been wondering why my child 4.7 doesn't respond to verbal

(correctly) (like I'll say pick up your plate and put it in the sink and he'll

start looking around not understanding what I'm saying, directions, or anwser

yes/no, who what when questions when asked.

Autism spectrum has been ruled out. Verbal I.Q> severe mental retardation

(becos of the verbal apraxia), non verbal I.Q. a little above normal. Everyone

thinks he's smart, he's always figured out tasks quickly. But here's this

problem why is he not responding appropriately when talked to, (when you know

it's a response he can say) and why isn't he following verbal directions???

This can't just be V. Apraxia right? Maybe it is APD. What is everyone's

thoughts? Knowone seems to know. It always comes down to, well we can't know for

sure until he can communicate better. Please let me know what you think.

Shilo mother of V. Apraxia 4.7, and Preston 16months
