Which procedure did you have? Do you know how much protein is in your urine?

And may I ask how long ago you had your procedure?

<<Sweetie, you sound exactly like me. I mean as far as your Ob visits. Yes,

I've had friends (w no wls) that had toxemia..my fear was that I was getting

I am definitely freaked and paranoid!!! =) This is a new area to me so

Obviously I'm not a doctor, so I can't speak with any authority other

than just gut feeling, but from what I understand about gastric

bypasses, once your weight loss has slowed, you're probably not having

much (if any) malabsorption anymore as your intestine has re-adjusted to

its new length. You should be plenty far out from your surgery to even

consider it a high risk pgcy... again, I'm not aware of your particular

form of surgery and its ramifications for long-term absorption, so this

all may be hooey, but I don't think that you should be seeing protein in

your urine, especially this far post-op.

*I'd* be concerned... if it were me...

" Finally my questions- has anyone else had protein in their urine? Is anyone

else with a high risk OB due to stomach stapling? "

I can't really answer about the protien since I have yet to be pregnant. But I

always assumed that I would see a high risk OB at least once or twice during a

pregnancy after wls. This isn't standard?

No, it's really not. It depends on how far post-op you are, and what

your particular OB/GYN thinks. But from what I understand, it's actually

not considered high-risk if you're more than six months or a year

post-op. My doctor didn't even blink an eyelash, and never brought it

up. I mentioned several times that I shouldn't be 'scoped unless the

person doing the 'scoping was aware of my alterations, and he didn't

seem to think that there was much chance I'd have to get 'scoped anyway.

Most post-wlsers have normal pregnancies, at least the ones of us here

have. There are a few exceptions, of course, but there are exceptions in

the " normal " population too. Some OB/GYNs will refer you to a high-risk

doc, but some won't.

I tend to be rather contemptuous of doctors, on the whole. LOL Don't let

them brush you off. If you have to switch OBs, do it. And let us know

how things go, okay? I'd like to keep up with you. : )

Glad you joined us, Terri!

I can't imagine why you'd be turned away by anyone? I mean, what do they

do when people move in the middle of their pregnancies and have to

switch OBs? You never know 'til you try, in any case.

Sweetie, you sound exactly like me. I mean as far as your Ob visits. Yes,

I've had protein in my urine. Like you, I researched and read, yada, yada,

yada. Well, to the best of my knowledge, as long as you don't also have

sugar present, you should be o.k. Also, if you do develop toxemia, it's a

" pregnancy thang " , not a wls issue.

I also concluded that my protein was present because I was still in a " fat

burning " mode. Protein in the urine is an indicator of that. I was one

year post-op when I became pregnant. Some of us stay in that mode longer

than others. At my fifth month check-up, it was the first time that no one

mention protein being present in my urine.

As for the weight gain, just try not to gain over, I believe 20-25

pounds.(baby weight) Just like the nurses told me, as well as all of the

sites, and books, now is the time when you are suppose to gain SOME weight.

As far as high risk, well we've all had wls(VBG, Stapling, RNY, BPD, DS...)

I'm also AMA(Advanced Maternal Age). I will be delivering at age 35. I'm

no doctor by any means, and honestly, your post sounded like me. Kind of

" freaked " and " Paranoid " . I'm just now beginning to calm down myself.

Although it's good to " keep your eyes open " , and inquire.

CONGRATS on the weightloss and pregnancy! When is your due date? I'm due

December 9th.

Kris...like you, I'm not a doctor either, but I believe mal-absorption still

takes place. That's why we're required to take vitamins and B12 shots for

the rest of our lives. Once your intestines are shortened, they are

shortened. Absorption will not ever take place where it was suppose again.

Your body adjusts to the new intake. The shortened intestines, is what

enables us to maintain. This is what I've always understood it to be.

Ooops, one more thing, it does depend upon which surgery a person's had.

There is no mal-absorption involved in just stapling and VBG, but if a

person has had any type of RNY(distal or proximal), then the mal-absorption

issue is relevant.

So Terri, if you had only stomach stapling, then NO, you don't have

mal-absorption issues.

Awww, SMOOCHES! Of course, the whole thing is a learning process for ALL of

us. We just live and learn, and hopefully this whole " wls thing " , will give

us continued success in keeping the old " obesity monster " away, huh. What

procedure did you have anyway?

LOL! I had a VBG in 97, and it's not been successful (except for the

adorable little boy who's in the living room saying " Ho Ho Ho " right

now), so I'm contemplating a revision to a BPD/DS next year sometime.

No, he's my third (although he's my first *pregnancy*) <grin>. I am a

member of Revision and keep up with what's being said there, although I

don't contribute much yet since I'm pre-everything. I know it will be

different if I have to have a bypass-type procedure, and that's why I'm

still in the debating game at this point.

I'm guessing he must've heard " ho ho ho " on a video his sisters were

watching or something, or perhaps he was just vocalizing (he does that

often). He's hilarious, he really is.

LMHO!! You're funny! hehe

I'd love to have more. I got pg again last September, had a normal

ultrasound showing the baby and the heartbeat, but I was a good bit

heavier that I was when I was pg with Isaac, and I think that I

miscarried due to PCOS/elevated blood sugar/whatever. I was 10 weeks

along, in mid-November, and miscarried very suddenly, in a hotel room

while dh and I were having a weekend away.

I'm going to see a new OB/GYN in a few weeks, and I'm hoping he'll be

willing to try me on Glucophage to see if I can manage my weight a

little bit better *and* maybe even get pg again. We shall see. I don't

really want to go the Clomid route, I'd rather just see if fixing my

blood sugar woes will move things along.

He sounds precious(aren't they all). I can't wait!Ooooh baby, baby, baby,

baby....(In the voice of the mother on the Clumps movie, while clapping :-)

Do you plan on having anymore? How much have you gained? Yes,

mal-absorption are more invasive and extreme, etc., however, as long as you

are aware, and mindful and diligent to take your vitamins, your health

shouldn't be compromised. Now you know I ain't no doctor........I'm just

keeping my fingers crossed that our ears or toes don't fall off in the next

20 years.LOL!
