Guest guest
Shanna, I agree with what wrote. I think that even though your doctor is not calling his method the Ponseti method it is most definitely similar and from your postings it sounds as though you have quite a bit in common with the parents that have used the Ponseti method. Maybe more in common than you realize. Our experience with the traditional method was quite different than yours. For instance, our casting for 3 months was below the knee everytime, there was never going to be a tenotomy of any type performed during the casting stage, it would have been included in the major surgery at a later date and that would have been followed by AFO's, no DDB's of any kind. Our old ortho told us that those particular shoes were no longer even used. Since your doctors method seems so similar to the Ponseti method I would think you could still find some valuable information and comparisons to some of the other parents on the group. I have found many of your postings very similar to some of my own experiences, especially now that Zowie is in the shoes! Guest guest
No Ihavent had a chance to ask him but I will try to when she has her appointment on the 3rd of January. He says he doesnt practice the Ponseti but his treatment is quite similar with the castings and positioning I guess. He was taught at some school in Michigan. This is where he learned and practiced before he came here. He says the Ponseti method is different because it only requires minimal casting but more use of the DBB. So I dont know .. Zowie was casted from day 1 of her life until November 30th then she had the tenotomy and then 3 more weeks of casts then the DBB on December 20th she will be 4 months old on the 2nd of January. And I thought the Ponsetimethod was only 3 casts? Is that 3 weeks?Hmmm I am not really sure though but I will try and remember to ask him at her appointment... Guest guest
Shanna, Ponseti casting usually lasts 5-9 weeks depending on the severity and stiffness of the feet when started from birth. Some of us parents whose children were treated later had less casting because they had prior casting that stretched the ligaments but never correctly aligned the foot. Your doctor's method sounds much more similar to Dr. Ponseti's method than it does to our original doctors. Rose was casted for 6 months, and then she was going to have surgery (not the tenotomy). She would have worn an AFO after a total of 8 weeks of post-op casts. Joy http://community.webtv.net/joybelle15/ROSESCLUBFOOTPAGE
Guest guest
Ahhhh I see. I just thought everyone using the Ponseti method was treated in like 3 or 4 castings but now I understand... Okedoke. Well maybe he is using the method and wont admit to it? But why would he not admit it right? The way I hear it is that is the best way to go. Although her first cast was below the knee for about 4 days then every one after that was all full leg casts and the tenotomy at about 3 months. SHe was shy a week but heck it was close enough for them to do it becuase of anesthesia risk and all I guess. Anyway wow maybe he is HUH???? Guest guest
Shanna, Even with the Ponseti Method, even 3 or 4 casts seems to be remarkable. Jakob had 1 set of below the knee (before our referral to Dr. Weinstein) for a week, then 5 full leg sets of casts with Dr. Weinstein - including the ones after the tenotomy. I think more in terms of the length of time the child is in casts - which for Jakob was from birth to 8 weeks old. Shanna wrote: > Ahhhh I see. Guest guest
Yeah see I still dunno what he is using because she was changed every week for 6 weeks then every 2 weeks thereafter then the tenotomy at 3 3/4 months old. then casts for 3 weeks straight then now the shoes! then we had the shoes changed into the wrong feet shoes. LOL Thats what I call them cause that is what it looks like.. It looks as though her shoes are on the wrong feet.
