HI all, we know how Zinc in an OTC cream/ointment can be beneficial for healing and I think Desitin is one with the highest %... I thought I'd pass on this article about it's benefits. ;)

Zinc and Skin Health: Overview of Physiology and Pharmacology

Schwartz R., PhD1, Marsh Randall G., PhD1 AND Draelos Zoe , MD1

Background. Zinc is known to have a critical role in overall human physiology, which likely explains many of its therapeutic uses for the last several thousand years.

The specific roles zinc plays in skin health and function are less widely known yet are likely just as critical based on the manifestations of dietary zinc deprivation, which include moderate to severe dermatitis.

Objective. To provide a critical review of the scientific literature as to the physiologic importance of zinc to skin, the biochemical basis for these effects, and pharmacologic aspects of zinc therapeutics.

Results and Conclusions. Skin is in a continual state of renewal, placing a high demand on zinc-based enzymes and proteins that direct this process.

The importance of zinc physiologically is especially evident in studies of wound healing and inflammation reduction. During these processes, the high needs for zinc can be supplemented externally, generally increasing the rates of the natural processes.

Topical zinc delivery involves the pharmacologic optimization of zinc delivery, often mediated by the solubility of the zinc material and interactions within the product matrix.

Hi Dee, and thanks for this article as usual.I have

also found with a couple of different products that

zinc is very beneficial for skin things. Just an add

on, when and if somebody buys Desitin, be sure to buy

the one that contains the zinc. They also sell one

that doesn't have any and it just isn't as effective.

Thanks Arline for mentioning Desitin also comes without the zinc content, I didn't know that, jeesh.

But.... I ran across a group of women on a forum who used the

Desitin Creamy with Aloe & Vit E formula and most said it was terrible and really irritated their kids with diaper changes, many said it made it much worse and gave it a thumbs down rating big time. So it's definitely one I'd not use for us either.

Look for the reg. Desitin ointment and like Arline said make sure it's got the zinc, (I think it's 40%).... as apparently the creamy one has some but 1/4th the amt. so one women wrote. Also remember that ointments in any type of topical medication are less likely to irritate since generally they have only the main ingredient in a petroleum base where a cream or lotion will have a lot more other ingredients that can irritate in it's base.

Thanks Ar.

Dee~ ;)

I was wondering about the plain zinc oxide that comes in a tube. Is

that the same helpful or not? I have used it in the past, and it is

cheaper.

I also was curious if anyone had tried Butte Paste? It's a true otc

cream, a bit more expensive.

Also on a side not my gp once gave me a prescription for this is what

it says " Super Duper Butte Cream. " It's compund of several different

components. She used to be a nurse and it was used for patients that

were sore vaginally, bed sores etc and there was no other treatment.

It's a component the nurses came up. I need to call and find out the

ingredients. I just thought it was funny.

I have used both and I don't remember precisely but

somehow I have it in my head that the plain zinc oxide

is more sticky and messy but I would try it. It

couldn't hurt and it really is a protector.
