To Joyce, Peggy and all other oxygen experts, I wasn't paying attention on all the earlier oxygen posts since I wasn't using it yet ( yes I know a horrible trait for a teacher and student!). So far Apria has delivered about 10 of the big green and silver tanks for me each week and this week they want to know if I want liquid as well as the regular. Do I? other times I had no idea my Oz was so low. Last night, since I wasn't sleeping anyway...I took my Oz level many times. And was surprised that some of the times I am in the 80's while resting in bed...not for long tho - it usually heads back for the 90's. But, I was very surprised. My guy that brings my Oz from S.O.S. is going to loan me a gadget that measures your oxygen level all night. This back pack is heavy this morning!!!! Putting my arms to sleep, almost. , I have never used liquid O2. I think Leanne uses it at work and a concentrator at home and tanks for running around. Some say the liquid freezes up but it lasts longer for a trip out shopping or whatever. Did they bring small tanks to that go into a bag you carry over your shoulder? Remember the fun we had about the BOA (bag of air) from LL Bean. That is what some of us ordered to carry instead of the plain ol' bag they give. The small tanks don't last as long but I keep extras in my car in a rolling bag.If your just getting started with O2, be sure you get a little cosmetic bag and put a key, batteries, washers, be sure they give you rubber ones, the plastic do not work well at all. I have swivels, connectors and a little bitty knife I can cut the white band off the bottles with. All that is in my carry bag and one in the roller bag. You'll learn all this stuff and not even think of it. Did they bring the tanks that go into a cart you pull? I use that most of the time when I go out since I am on 4 & 5LAsk for a demonstration of the liquid. I'm sure you get more input. Basically, there are four general classifications of oxygen equipment. 1-Stationary-For use at home2-Portable-These are systems of greater than 10 pounds, generally on wheels, and for those who don't leave home much. They also become necessary for those who leave home but need very high flow.3-Ambulatory-These are systems of less than 10 pounds to be worn to leave home on a regular and frequent basis.4-Travel-These are systems designed specifically for travel, whether by air, car, or other means.

Oxygen can be delivered in the following means:1-Concentrators-Electric devices which remove the oxygen from the air in your home and give it back to you as a purer form of oxygen.2-Compressed-These are the tanks you describe. Oxygen is in a compressed gas state.3-Liquid-As the word would indicate, the oxygen is in liquid form.

Also, one other item to mention is a regulator or conserving device. At initial levels most portables have these to only give you oxygen when you breathe and therefore reduce the consumption and lengthen the amount of time you can get from the portable tank.

Now, that brings us to putting together combinations.

The most common combination people start with is a concentrator for use at home, a large compressed tank (if they require 24 hour oxygen) to serve as backup in case of a power failure, and small compressed tanks to be used to get out. Those tanks can be worn in shoulder bags or backpacks. Now to travel you would either need to carry your concentrator with you or have many portable tanks or both. Or, you would get a small travel concentrator (expensive) which can be used on a cart.

The most common liquid combination is a reservoir at home and small tanks such as Helios or Caire that you fill from that reservoir. For travel by car you may even have a reservoir put in your car seat.

Ultimately the system needs to be designed with your level of activity and oxygen requirements in mind.

When talking the most common, that is Concentrator and Compressed Tanks versus Liquid, both have advantages and disadvantages. The concentrator and tanks is simple and you don't need to be home to get refills, simply leave the small portable tanks out front. Oxygen companies and insurers like concentrators because the equipment is cheap. However, the electric cost can run you as much as $30-40 per month.

Liquid does require you to be home to get your reservoir refilled, but you don't worry about running out in your portable because you control filling it. Typically you can go from 1 week to a month between reservoir refills. Liquid requires no electricity. Also, unlike the concentrator, liquid is quiet.

There is also one other device not seen much because of cost, but you can get an autofill system with a concentrator that allows you to fill your own tanks at home.

I started on a Concentrator with Compressed Tanks in a shoulder bag and a large M60 Compressed Tank for emergency backup. I will be switching to Liquid as I'm currently having to get tanks twice a week and also the pulse units make a hissing noise and I want to attend quiet concerts. In addition, for travel, I'll be able to get a reservoir for the car when required. Another reason is simply the cost savings. Other reasons I prefer liquid include not having the noise all the time of a concentrator, the greater range in time of a liquid portable versus shoulder tanks on compressed, and personally I like the feel of liquid better. It seems to me (and this may just be me) to flow more than being forced as in a concentrator.

Now, how to get what you want. That can be difficult. I have found the doctors offices of little use. I would discuss with the oxygen company and maybe their head of respiratory therapy. Ultimately, when you decide on the combination best for you, I'd have them tell you how to get the doctor to write the prescription. In fact, some will even write it and send it to the doctor for signature.

kind words. Obviously, I am a research freak. I do it for myself and

glad to share in any way. Like most everyone, I started with the oxygen

equipment they showed up with which just doesn't turn out to be right

for me. (They are getting a bit tired of delivering cannisters twice a

week too I know).

If you are on 2-3L you could use the Helios. It is so light weight. Then get the B tanks for back up. Or just use the B tanks. Those big E tanks are hard to cart around.

Just make sure you have water bottles and back up on all parts such as the gaskets, connectors and ratchets.

Note that Caire has products very similar to Helios (Puritan

). In fact, their equivalent to Helios slightly outperforms

it. Also, if you need more than 3 L or Continuous, the Helios

Marathon is only slightly heavier. And, if you need high dosage

continuous, Puritan- make the Companion 1000 and Companion

1000T. Helios holds 308 Liters and weights 3.6 pounds full, Marathon

holds 685 and weighs 5.6 and 1000 holds 1058 and weighs 8.1 pounds.

One other thing on Helios and other Liquid Portables-Liquid Oxygen

does evaporate. So, its not just usage time to consider, but also the

time its sitting.
