I remember she used to have an " innie " -- I remember this because when she was an infant she was very sick. This was " B4 DX " ! She would cough and cough and cough. Then eventually her belly button would stick out during her coughing spells. Then she had an outie -- permanently! They waited awhile to see if it would go away. The problem with Patty is that she has CF and Mitochondrial Disease (which causes her to have low muscle tone and hyperflexibility). When the surgeon examined her, he saw a girl with an umbilical hernia that might repair itself. After the second wait and see followup, I asked him how likely it was that a child with CF (who coughs all the time) who also happens to have a mito disease which causes low tone (ESPECIALLY in her abdomen) -- how LIKELY was it that this would repair itself?? He decided to consult with her pulmo doc AND her metabolic doc. Then they decided, together, that it wasn't very likely! Which is pretty much what I had figured out already! The problem with specialists is that they aren't very good at looking at the whole picture if that picture takes them outside the realm of their specialty! I had a similar problem with 's (5yo wcf and possible mito) ortho doc. was also born with bilateral clubfeet. We waited a long time waiting to see if he would need surgery. The doc kept saying his feet were still flexible. All I could think was, " DUH! He is low tone and a little hyperflexible! Please try to remember that when assessing the clubfeet! " I was so worried that we would be outside the " ideal " surgery time before they would figure it out! Luckily, he didn't need the surgery! Guest guest
Hi Sally! Thanks for answering. I was hoping that this would cure itself and go away. His is HUGE! Gerald says it's as huge as his " down below! " Kathy
Guest guest
Hi Carol, thanks for responding. I am not 100% sure that Jarrett is CF free....he doesn't do a lot of coughing. He does have an enormous gut that I worry about. I hope that is not the case. Well, thanks for letting me know. I am hoping that it fixes itself! Guest guest
Hi Traci...gosh, I have never heard of this until now. I ask other parents that I know and no one has seen or heard of it. Is is normal and/or does it occur with CF'ers? Kathy
