One evening (many years ago) battling the evening commuter rush at Waterloo

I had walked through 2 full carriages and finally decided it was time to

give up and sit in the middle of a 3 seater seat. So I stopped and, without

really looking at him, said to the guy sitting by the window " can I squeeze

in here " . The answer came " yes, of course you can Cerys, I wondered if I'd

see you " . It was my Brother who'd been up in London for an interview I

didn't even know about.

> So Lynda, what was your favourite watering hole?

I think I used them too often to retain any brain cells as I can't remember

the names. I worked in London for 5 years in 3 offices near Blackfriars.

Each office had its own local which we used a lot. Pubs I have vague

memories of are The Blackfriars by the bridge, The White something on

Farringdon Street, one just off Salisbury Square that I could see from my

desk, The Bell? by St Brides, The Doggets on the south bank of the river,

one in Stamford Street where we had our training department and a couple of

wine bars on Fleet Street.

Where Grae used to work 60 hours a week for 140 quid!

Many happy cider memories

El Vino's? For a while, IIRC, women weren't allowed in there or not

with trousers on or something. Also the Cheshire Cheese. And Hodgson's

which was on Chancery Lane - returned there many a time even after

leaving the area.

Ahh....

LOL.

I don't get to London very often but some years ago went to see Cats. we managed

to get seats in the gods. just as we were going for an interval drink I heard a

voice I recognised turned a saw a guy who had been at the same college as I had

in France. He was from Denmark and we hadn't seen each other for 10 years. He'd

also bought last minute tickets.

Ahh! The Doggetts I remember it well after 10 years working for Sainsbury's

on Stamford Street.

Ah - now you're into my old territory! I worked in Bankside House,

across the

road from Bankside Power Station (you know me and power

stations/leckie

lines!). Wasn't the Dogget's the one that served shark steaks on the

menu?

Also nearby was the dear old Anchor - went there for a reunion (after

8 yrs) of

my old colleagues back in February. The area has completely changed

and I got

lost between the Market Porter (another old watering hole) and the

Anchor - and

my old job used to involve geography/map reading skills!

I used to frequent these two as well. I was friends with a doctor and a

nurse at Guys and these were their regular haunts as well as a big coaching

inn near London Bridge (the ?) where I once had my handbag pinched,

and a place in the arches where you bought beer by the jug.

Must be something to do with the area - I had my cheque book and card nicked

out of my handbag in the Pepys(?), across the river from the Anchor, one

drunken night

We used to go to the Inn too, especially for celebratory meals/leaving

do's etc in the rooms upstairs. It was like stepping back in time going into

the courtyard there.

Now this one I have been to when I worked for the National Trust as the

is owned by the NT.

Our usual haunt was the 2 Chairmen at the end of Old Queen Street & Queen

Anne's Gate.
