Guest guest
Hello all, Tomorrow I'm going to this diabetic group at the local hospital. I have read from the hospital's website that the " group " utilizes the ADA reconmendations in diabetic care and diet. Should I arm myself about this because from what I read from here and the advice I get from all of you is that the ADA is not right for diabetes anyhow. I want to gain knowledge and learn what is the best way to go as far as my treatment plan etc..like someone said " Your mileage may vary " and like another saying " to each their own " I want to educate and better myself in learning what I can about how to eat better and excercise even with all my " other " heatlh problems. Like I said in other posts I not only deal with diabetes I have orthopedic and fibro health related problems... so my care will be different compared to someone with only one illnesses. So wish me luck in going to this meeting of diabetics and see what I can benefit from them. BTW I want to thank everyone too I have really learned alot from all of you during my almost 3 months of being diagnosed as a type 2. Thanks alot all hugs, Patti aka patti_cakes70
Guest guest
patti, accept the support, be wary of the information. Particularly about a way of eating. Other info may be totally valid. From being here, I think you will be able to tell the difference. Good luck, Helen
Guest guest
Good luck, Patti...and do let us know how it goes. I rather agree with 's suggestion...listen quietly if you can (I probably couldn't!) take what sounds reasonable and pitch the rest. I'm glad we're able to help you. Guest guest
Patti, Is this a regularly-meeting support group, or are you refering to the Diabetes Education classes that many hospitals offer? If the latter, I'd say 'take it all with a grain of salt. " You SHOULD learn several useful things at an education class: when to test, how to handle 'sick days', (what OTC medications are OK when you're sick, etc., proper care and monitoring when sick, etc.) how to read and interpret a food label, the right way to test your glucose (perhaps even hints on setting up your monitor, etc.) and to test and maintain your monitor (using he control liquid, proper storage temperatures, etc.) Remember, it's really no different than here: what works for some may or may not work for you. Let your meter be your guide. I can only say that I was told to make an appt. to see the dietitian at a local hospital so we could discuss a diet plan for diabetics. I made the appointment but then did some looking on the WWW for " diabetic diets " . What I saw appalled me to the extent that I called and cancelled the appointment. I didn't feel like dealing with the co-pay if that was the sort of information I'd be given. Of course, I don't KNOW that she would have touted the high-carb ADA diet. sky
