My three year old son is verbal aproxic and he screams a lot!

He is just now becoming verbal with very limited language. Try sign language

with him as an alternative to speaking or picture exchange system. My son has

done well with both although he still will tantrum if he is not understood.

Hi everybody. My son almost surely (no dx yet) has apraxia - verbal

for sure, oral mildly at least, and mild global. He just turned two

years old and has not said a single true word. He can make some

sounds that have meaning -- " uhnumnum " for food, " uuuuuuuuhhhhhhh " in

a growly voice for things like drills, cars, tractors, and " uh uh uh "

for " uht oh " when something spills or breaks. Mostly he can do these

sounds spontaneously and isn't really able to do them at will if we

are paying attention to him or asking him to do them.

What he does do a lot is scream. Sometimes it's a sweet high scream,

as much as a scream can be sweet, when he's calling us. But most of

the time it's a gurgly, growly, extremely loud scream. About half

the time it's because he's trying to explain something to us and he's

frustrated, and the other half is a standard two year old tantrum.

It is very very loud and frequent. I go to bed each night with my

ears hurting as if I've been at a concert all day.

We try to keep his frustration to a minimum, and when he's having an

actual tantrum I treat it like I would for any other child - I tell

him " I can see you are very mad right now, I will try to help you

when you calm down " or whatever, and then I just ignore it. But for

the screaming that is meant to be communicative, I'm not sure what we

should do.

My parents want to tell him " don't scream, you hurt my ears, try to

be quieter " , that sort of thing. But I'm not sure if he has much, if

any, control over it, especially when he's told or when he's trying

to do it one way or the other - just like when he's trying hard to

say something, he is just not able to. But my parents seem to think

that even though he can't do enough motor planning to speak, he can

do enough motor planning to modulate his volume. Is that true? What

do you think? Did your pre-verbal apraxia kids scream a lot?

Thanks

My son has verbal and oral apraxia. Before starting him on flex oil and now

Pro EFA he would scream, bite, scratch and etc. His neurolgist put him on

clonodine which helped but he kept waking up in the middle of the night and

acted drugged up all the time. After a week I took him off of that and

started the flex oil the results were fantastic. My son does not scream or

bite or scratch or any or that.

What is flex oil? Is it the same thing as Flax Seed Oil? Where do you get

it and how much do you give him? How much does he weigh? How much Pro-EFA

do you give him? Thanks, KIM

Flex oil is the same as Flax Seed Oil and you can get it at any Healthfood

store. I gave my son 1 tsp a day which I just put in his milk bottle in the

am but I use the same bottle all day so that I can make sure that he drinks

all of the oil. My son weighs approx. 33 pds. You will definitly see the

difference in your child. I started my son on Pro EFA yesterday and stopped

the Flax seed. I think on the Pro EFA you can give them 1 or 2 capsules; I

use two. The Pro EFA make my son cranky so I may start the flax seed with

the Pro EFA.
