Guest guest
Welcome, Rhonda. Sara, correct me if I am wrong, but the clicking in the hips is a sign of hip dysplasia. I know Jakob has had his hips checked at every pediatrician's appointment. As for trying to curl the feet in, I think it might be normal. I see Jakob doing this a bit and he is 2 years old. When he is asleep and relaxed, he does not curl his feet in at all. Jakob had his feet checked on the 7th and both Dr. Weinstein (his regular ortho) and Dr. Ponseti said his feet look great. Do keep us updated and welcome to you and Tigger. Rhonda wrote: > > Hi!This is Rhonda . some of you already know me from my posts > on the Clubfoot board at PP. Guest guest
Hey, Rhonda! How are you? I have been thinking about you and wondering how Tigger's been doing. So, he still doesn't care for the brace, huh? Does he just get upset when you put it on, or is he upset for awhile with it on? Rose threw fits and twisted around until about a couple of months ago. She turned a year about 2 weeks ago, and it really is a lot easier to put on than it was in the 'good ol' days'! I put the brace on while my husband reads her her favorite, favorite book (pics of all kinds of different cows!), and she is really good. I think Tigger will adjust eventually to it getting put on. I thought Rose would never get better about putting it on, but she did. Now, if he still has problems once you get it on, I'm not sure what to do because Rose usually adjusted well once we had it on. She just hated getting it on!! Well, enough rambling from me! I'm glad you joined the list! It's good to hear from you again. Guest guest
Joy, Actually, he doesn't object to having the bar put on. It's just after about an hour he starts to try to get it off. And it's the shoes more so than the bar. I can not even keep socks on his feet. He hates anything on his feet. He wants to be barefoot all the time! Rhonda Re: Hello >From: joybelle15@... Guest guest
Hi Windie Lilly, My son r has bilateral clubfeet. I would love to see some changes in the shoes, if it's possible. I understand the need for the strap under the laces, but it is very cumbersome to say the least (it was made much easier by Theresa's wonderful suggestions though ie: tying three knots in the laces). I think the challenge will come in trying to make them easy enough for moms and dads to get on and off, but hard for the little ones to do it. Maybe a strap to hold the foot in place, then a velcro overlay (instead of laces), then another strap to hold the velcro down??? I hope you are all successful. Best of luck. Have a Joyous Day! Guest guest
Hi , Now the Ivy is adjusted it is hard to think of somethings to make the shoes better. We haven't had any problems with blisters, or soar areas. Being Ivy is on the older side of wearing the shoes I would suggest a easier/faster way of removeal. Not laces and buckles.... or a way to quickly detach the bar and leave the shoes on. That is so that a bigger baby could sit in a restruant high chair, or shopping cart, swing, exersuaser with ease and you wouldn't have to spend ten min. taking off and (putting back on the shoes) Though I usally keep them off during the duration of our stay making her time out the shoes more like two to three hours a day not just one. On clubfoot someone posted that a lady went on about how cute the shoes are.... I have had that said to me too... don't know if they were just being nice and was curious about the brace so commented on the shoe... They really are not bad " looking " though. The fringes at the toes are kinda cute for the girls. Another thought would be a color or choice of design.... a hiking type boot for the boys(or girls if you like that type of style) Best Wishes Sara and Ivy8/17/99 www.clubfoot.net
Guest guest
I agree with you Sara about the shoes not working well with restaurant high chairs. Lucky for us, when Jakob first started wearing the brace, he wasn't sitting up on his own - that started a month or so after he was wearing it less. Also like Kelli said, tying the knots in the laces (one in the center, the other 2 on the ends) makes it easier for me so that I don't have to worry about not having enough of the lace to tie them properly. That is a major concern of mine as Jakob gets older and much more mobile. I had a lot of problems tying the laces when he was younger - now he only wears the brace at bedtime, so I usually put it on after he is asleep. Something more colorful would be nice at times. I guess if we really got desperate, we could paint them ourselves I feel so far removed from the days when Jakob had to wear the brace all the time that I don't have any good suggestions for improvements. I don't know about velcro instead of laces. That was almost easier for Jakob to undo than the laces were. A style choice might be nice. I know most doctors do not recommend the old fashioned white leather high top baby shoe anymore, but our children still wear the same basic design on the brace. I don't know what else I can say about it though.
Guest guest
I like the idea of the hiking boots. As for the velcro vs. shoe laces, manages to undo the double knots I tie in his shoes anyway. The buckle seems to keep his feet in well enough. Guest guest
Dr. Ponseti will describe the ideal shoe when you see him. The most important part of the shoe to prevent blisters and problems has been the more prominent heel in newborn kids. It is normal to have the large heel pad at this age and the shoe manufacture often does not take it into account and makes a flat back shoe. This part of the shoe is called the " counter " and the counter should be cup shaped to allow more room for the heel pad. Some baby tennis shoes have a good counter and can be glued to a thin board with shoe goo or a glue called goop and then placed in the Dennis-Brown splint. See attached. Thicker padding around the top of the shoe also creates a deeper counter and more room for the heel pad. Brown
Guest guest
Sent the shoe pictures without adding that the shoes in the picture are too flat in the back and would be better with a deeper counter but it shows how to attach an " ideal " soft soled shoe to a DB bar if one can't find hard soled shoes. Guest guest
Hi, Joy. I'm fairly new at posting and am glad to " meet " you. Congratulations on the good progress of your pregnancy! I'm sorry to hear about the difficulty with Rose's toe. You've probably heard of and tried many remedies, but I remember reading not long ago about people having success getting rid of toenail fungus with Vicks VapoRub. It was in a column called People's Pharmacy by Joe and Terry Graedon. I think they have a web site of the same name, if you want to investigate it. Just thought I'd mention it as something that might be worth a try.. and
Guest guest
Thanks A. for the tip on the Vick's Vaporub for toenail fungus and the website! I hadn't heard that one yet! The vinegar hasn't seemed to make much difference, and it looks like it is spreading to other nails. I think I'll continue the vinegar treatments AND do the Vick's. I've also had suggestions for tea tree oil, flaxseed oil, and lavendar! I'd try 'em all, but I think that would be overload! As for the line in 's shoes, Rose had that problem also. Her foot took a LONG time to match up to the line that had been drawn! I could tell that her foot was in there correctly, and I did write to Dr Ponseti about it. I like the suggestion that has been made to do away with the line! Joy http://community.webtv.net/joybelle15/ROSESCLUBFOOTPAGE
