Guest guest
--- Hi Cast Lady! I am so excited that someone fomr Shriners is excited about this method and is helping getting Shriners hospitals on board! This really does bring me much joy. My husband had all of his clubfoot work done at Shriners and right now we are on the outs with his family because we chose to take Sam to Iowa City instead of to Shriners in the twin cities. This caused a lot of hurt -- especially since my father-in-law is a Mason. We just wanted a gentler way for Sam -- not lots of surgeries like went through. What can we do to help get this method into the Shriners hospitals?? I realize that it isn't pracitcal for some situations, but it has been a miracle for our family. Please advise. I know I will do my best to help. I think that all parents with clubfoot babies should at least have this option. By the way, if you were at the symposium on Friday, you might remember us. Our son Sam was casted at about 3 pm. He was the five month old one that wasn't happy until he could watch the wind up Pooh TV. But of course, a lot of kids might have been like that too. Please let us know what we can do to help. Hi Beth, and welcome to the " club " :-) My family and I were in Iowa last Saturday, but I don't believe I met you. Thanks for the intro. Everybody on the nosurgery4clubfoot list are all friendly and helpful, so if you have any questions feel free to ask :-) Masoner http://www.clubfoot.net/
Guest guest
, I also wonder if a parent wants treatment at a Shriners could they chose any? I called them before and they were suppose to send me an application that never arrived. I wonder if that happens alot too. There is travel involved in seeking a Shriners hospital; the nearest one is in Checopee Mass.. unless one seeks a portible set up closer to there home. I do understand it does take awhile to be approved for treatment in the mean time we chose to go to New York Bone and Joint Diseases since they offer a trained doctor in the Ponseti Method and we never heard back from Shriners in Ma. Take Care, Kathy What Shriners are you reffering too?
Guest guest
The Cast Lady, What Shriners location are you reffering too please up-date me or have I missed something. I would really like to know if a Shriners near Mass. were treating with Ponseti Method so as to reffer new parents. My son was treated prior to recieving the Ponseti method for six months before we located a trained doctor in the method closer to us in Mass. We do travel to NY city but it has been worth it my son's foot is beautiful. Best of Luck, Kathy
Guest guest
Good question, A family may chose to be seen at any Shriners but the travel could be a problem and a big expense. Generally the families are seen at their local facility. We see children from many states but our " Region " is some of Canada,Minn, Iowa, some of Wisc. N. & S. Dakota, Nebraska. But as I have said we have kids from all over who chose to come the long haul for one reason or another quite often it is due to internet access and info. on one of our Doc's. Guest guest
Hi Suzanne & Sam, Yes I do remember Sam, I was the blonde lady with glasses talking to the nurse and standing at the opposite end of the bed He was so good while in front of soooo... many.I was also lucky enough to be able to apply a cast with Dr. Ponseti on the little one from Mexico whos Dad is a Physician. I hope I am doing my part to swing Shriners to the Ponseti method. The Physicians are very receptive now as we see more and more stiff painfull feet in children who had surgery years ago and correcting recurrance in a surgical foot is much harder then a virgin foot. Dr. Aadalen is the Doc who was with me and is planning on only using this technique now. I find the manipulation and cast technique is much easier and gentler then the " stretching " casts we did before the big clubfoot release surgeries. One thing here that is a bit troubling is we rarely get new born nursery referals so we are not able to begin casting in the ultimate moments, so with your help we could get the word out on the internet to new parents and let everyone know about our free services to anyone for orthopaedic needs. Infact my daughter is being treated here for Scolliosis. We have the best of the best pediatric specialists coming to Shriners. Guest guest
The Cast Lady, Personally, I feel that one of the biggest steps in swinging the Shriners (or any other group of doctors) to the Ponseti Method is doing just what you are doing. You have been to the seminar this last weekend and have seen firsthand how successful it is. You are also learning the manipulation and casting technique that is so critical in the success of the method. It is also a concern that you at the Shriners do not see children with clubfoot from birth in most cases. In looking at some things I have compiled, it seems to me that most people do not find out about clubfoot in their children until after the birth. This was our experience along with the majority of those who answered an informal poll (which is listed at /surveys/nosurgery4clubfoot?id=59565 ) that was conducted through this mailing list. I do not know much about the Shriners organization (other than what I have seen through a couple of general - mostly surgically oriented - clubfoot sites. It seems to me that those who go to the Shriners usually end up going to the Shriners Hospital that is closest to their hometown. Can people request that their service come from any Shriners Hospital, or are they assigned to the closest one?

If you go to their web site www.shrinershq.org you can cruise the 22 hospitals, some are burn units. I will be on the Shriner E-mail system tomorrow inquiring if anyone in our system is providing the PONSETI method and then I will share it with all of you. I would encourage everyone to contact their local Shrine Hospitals to inquire also and this may stimulate interest within their Physician population to investigate. I am sorry and embarassed that you did not receive the info/application pack you requested, I have a unique position at my hospital where if I am aware of a need I can determine it's urgency/emergency and run someone through the gates quickly. Children with clubfeet are HIGH PRIORITY as far as I have been concerned. I could assist anyone who would like a quick contact for help getting a screening at any of the Shrine Hospitals. Please feel free to contact me at work E-mail emeyers@... Phone#1- pager#1- or my home e-mail jmeyers429@... The Cast Lady
Guest guest
Suzanne, I believe that there is also a Dr. at the St.Louis Shrinners that is practicing the Ponseti method. If I remember there is another Ponseti method at another Shrinners. I am sorry about your in laws and the hurt feelings. Guest guest
We applied for the Shriner's in October and our first appointment was in January when was 3 months old. I don't know how they determine which hospital you go to. There is one in Tampa and I believe there is one in ville, and both are the same distance for us. We went to the one in Tampa. Unfortunately, we have not had a good experience with the doctors there in regards to clubfoot. The only one who seemed remotely interested in Dr. Ponseti's method was the orthotist we saw the last time. But I guess it only takes 1 person to get it started... Guest guest
Cast Lady, It was so good to see you on the group, I really enjoy reading the mail from the doctors and nurses that sometimes write in. It gives us hope that the medical community is really listening. No, my daughters doctor was Dr. Farley at the University of Michigan. Dr. Ponseti told me he was going to contact Dr. Hensinger (Chair at Uof M ) directly since he knows him and I was hoping that it led to someone coming from here to the seminar. Thanks for asking. Hope to hear some more good results from your end soon.
