Janie,

I'm hanging in there, thanks, still in alot of pain. My right shoulder and arm hurt so bad this morning, it's feeling a bit better now than when I first woke up, I was cryin..lol. My hands and wrists hurt pretty bad too but what can ya do. I have some doctor appointments coming up so I'm praying something good comes out of one of them. I also have to have an MRI on my knee to see what is going on and how much damage has been done by the RSD. That will be Tuesday, I only hope it doesn't show anything requiring more surgery. I hope your doctor is able to do it arthroscopically, it is so much easier to recover from. Have you had surgery before? Sorry, I can't remember if you have. Anyway, I did some work today and going to relax now the rest of the weekend, try not to use my hands too much. I hope you are doing well, as well as you can with your knee too = ( I'll talk to you soon. <hugs>

Janie...ahh, so you are a knee surgery veteran too = ) I'll keep you posted on how the doctors go, hopefully good! Thanks for your support so much, I really appreciate it. I agree about the pain pills, sometimes I wonder why I take them but other times I say well, if it's this bad with the meds, how bad would it be without them! I couldn't use my right arm forever this morning, I woke up crying and was trying to get the mouthwash open and I just couldn't get it. I was trying to open it and started balling about not being able too, it's so frustrating sometimes to do the simplest things. I hope you are feeling good, I'll talk to you soon...going to try to find a movie to watch, keep me entertained..lol

If you don't mind me asking, why did they say 6 mos to a year? Do you have it internally? I too got my RSD from Reconstructive Knee Surgery, but I've had many surgeries over the years. I've had both regular and Arthroscopic. Since I was 17, I'm now 32, I've had about 20 surgeries and it wasn't until this last one in April of 2003 that I got this disease. But from all of the different stories in here surgery is not the only cause, some just fell down and got it. I hear what you are saying but it's kind of like getting on a plane, your chances are slim that you will crash, and you can get hit by a bus more easily than getting on a plane...does this make sense?? I'm sorry that you are suffering so much and I'm not downplaying that, just what started it. Can you please let me know why it is so bad that the doctors gave you a time frame? It may help others for warning signs, etc, but if you don't feel like talking about it I understand. Many prayers and thoughts for you...Lori

Janie have not had chance to really meet you nor get to know you and truly am sorry. I hope you know that this is not how normally do things as am very interested in how you and the others that are new are doing. But reading this note today and being gone out of the state for awhile, wanted to let you know how sorry I am that you have to go through surgery for your knee again. Of course you must be alot sorry than I, but do know you will be in my prayers and that I pray the surgery will take care of your troubles and you will be done for good, with dealing with surgeries. Take care and please again know I wish I could be helpful to you but at this point not able to help others than but will try. Take care my new friend and know you are cared for greatly and very much prayed for and want you to know we each want you to heal quickly and have great results from the surgery. Take care Janie and know I look forward to getting to know you.

Janie - I'm sorry to hear that you're recovering so slowly. So discouraging, I'm sure. Please take it slowly, as frustrating as that can be, and give yourself time to fully heal. Barbarajanie wrote:

Janie,

It is good to hear from you, but am sorry to hear that you still cannot drive or go to the store. But hang in there ok? It sounds like a long time but I don't know about you, for me the months somehow fly by even though I'm stuck in the house all the time. Maybe it's due to work, I don't know, but I cannot believe it is already May. Anyway, did he say why you were still having so much pain and not able to put much weight on it? Is it just still too swollen? I hope that this e-mail finds you feeling a little bit better as I know I'm behind in sending this. Keep that leg up and hang in a little bit longer, hopefully it will heal well and you will be able to go to Walmart = ) By the way - www.walmart.com hehe.

This is correct. You should see a semi-significant drop after a

couple of days, and then a more gradual drop should continue.

Avandia, Actos, etc. all 'build up' in the body and can take

anywhere from 3-6 weeks, depending on the particular

medication, to take full effect.

I have had some monstetr headaches and dizzy spells

In the meantime, are you able to drink decaffinated green tea?

Green tea has many, many benefits. All " true " teas have a

beneficial effect on blood sugar control, and seems to act

somewhat like insulin. Both regular and decaf both work, but

there's been some talk that diabetics should stay away from

caffeine, thus the suggestion of decaf. I REALLY like the

Celestial Seasoning's decaff green mandarin orange, and drink

it with a little bit of Splenda and a dash of cinnamon for a real

treat and blood-sugar double-whammy.

> I went Monday and saw the dietician she wants me to avoid

This is very good advice! I'm assuming she taught you how to

read the labels to find those hidden sugars? If not, basically

anything ending with " -ose " (Lactose, Fructose, Sucrose, etc.) is

a sugar. One exception is Sucralose, which is the non-name

brand for Splenda. Also, things with " Malt- " (such as Malt, Maltitol,

Maltodextrin, Maltose, etc.) tend to be sugar/sugar substitutes.

There's also the corn syrups, of course, and the ever-dreaded

'High Fructose Corn Syrup'

Keep in mind that some people get just as much of a kick out of

the sugar alcohols (maltitol, etc.) as they do out of real sugar.

She wants me to keep a

> record of my foods I eat and how often I eat.

This is a great plan to get you going on track and to design

something that will work for you, but you do have to be totally

honest with yourself about everything, even the little 'nibbles' that

go into your mouth for it to work. Don't omit something just

because it makes you feel 'guilty' that you ate it. If you're going to

eat something, she'll need to be able to work it into your WOE,

and/or teach you how to plan for the days you eat that particular

'no no.'

To be honest I can

> only tolerate eating once to twice a day and that is balanced

meals.

Hopefully this is something you can work on. Perhaps smaller,

meals? I've found my best control by eating 5 specifically

designed meals (balanced between carbs/protein/fat, vs.

between food groups) each day. Is your aversion/intolerance due

to intestinal issues, or just not liking to eat? Not eating causes

your liver to dump sugar to compensate for a lack of intake.

Tea and coffee (decaff, esp.) are exceptionally good for diabetics. There is a

substance in

green tea (and to a lesser degree in black tea) that acts as an insulin mimic --

so drink up!

Coffee and tea are both chock full of powerful antioxidants.

How are you doing with your other carbs? (Potatoes, bread, cereals, granola,

potato chips,

etc.?) All carbs are, in the end, sugar.

Hello, Patti. I love your nickname!

I'm new to the list but have never been known to sit back and keep my yap

shut. I noticed you said you were using Nutrasweet and was wondering what

you think about the taste of it? I switched to Splenda (sucralose) and to

me it tastes just like sugar, even if I dip a finger into some and taste it

directly. Of course there are tons of warnings about how Nutrasweet

(asparatame) and, to a more limited extent (because it's new, I suspect),

sucralose are bad for you. I'm not a sweet addict (much prefer spicy and

salty) but when I want sweet, I've been using Splenda. I've also used

Stevia, which is at least naturally-occurring rather than manufactured (for

whatever that's worth). Well, didn't meant to get off on a sweetner

lecture. I just thought that if you found Nutrasweet bitter at all, you

might like to try something else.

As long as I'm here and talking, I should introduce myself. I'm

newly-diagnosed as diabetes type 2 (about a month now) and after a month of

testing many more times than I'm allowed (insurance-wise) strips for, have

finally managed to get a handle on what I need to do to keep the BG numbers

low. Not quite there yet, but a morning reading of 124 is much better than

what I'd been seeing. I also experience what is called " dawn phenomenon " or

" dawn effect " so my morning numbers tend to be higher. By mid-afternoon

it'll be in the 90's even after meals. I've not found a way, yet, to

reduce the Dawn Effect numbers though I've tried some suggestions to eat a

bit of something just before I retire (normally around midnight).

Welcome aboard, Skydancer :)

I, too, have had this problem. I seem to have gotten ahold of it (most days) now

that I'm

following thediabeticdiet.com 's advice of eating 5 carb-balanced meals per day.

(You can

log on and use the promocode 'diabeticfree' to try it for one week and get an

idea of what I

mean, if you like).

Before that, I found that two big spoonfulls (about 4T or so?) of low-fat

cottage cheese

worked best for combating my Dawn Effect.

Patti:

Just got a chance to respond. I hope both of you will be ok, and soon.

Cutting out salt, caffine, and going back to work. Oyi, that's a HARD

thing to do, but he can do it. If he works, and can be married, he can

do this :).

In all due seriousness, I'd advise cutting back then quitting caffine,

don't need some nasty caffine withdraw headaches. Salt? That's easy

thankfully. Try Mrs. Dash, instead of salt. Or Mr. Dash (although

that's hard to find.)

I agree with others about your BGs. I don't wish to push anything, but

a low carb diet, with some sort of insulin mimic like alpha liopic

acid, (green tea, cinnimon) has been majorly helpful in getting my

fasting BGs in the mid 90s, to lower 110s. Just something to consider.

It's a big change but it worked with me.

I hope that works for you, and all the best!

Yes, I've definitely found that more smaller meals are helping.

I have some, but not low-fat. I wonder if some yogurt would work as well.

My problem has been that what seems to work one time won't work the next.

Too, since the nights are so much longer, I find I'm awaking more towards 8

a.m. instead of 6 a.m., which is my normal schedule. I rarely go to bed

before midnight (I've become addicted to the Iron Chef show).

darned poor life insurance.
