Hi Pam,

I am glad that you are pleased with NYU as I am also. Both Dr. Feldman

and Dr. Van Bosse are very nice to my son and us. My son has had very good

results last week with his third cast of the Ponseti Method. They have done

wonders with his foot. I am glad that we chose to travel to NY each week and

hope someday in our travels we will meet. Zach is going to have his heal

done the sixth week so this Tuesday is week five. We do not know the exact

date yet but will let you know. I do know people travel from ALL over the

country to be seen at the hospital we met a girl from Kansas who had a joint

disease that is rare being treated there. That makes it a little easier

knowing the hospital is rated well. Best of luck ! Kathy

Hi Kathy,

Everything I hear about the hospital and the staff associated with it

is first class. Ralph and I (especially me) and the kids are still

pretty nervous about the anesthesia part of things, but not at all

about the doctors, staff, or hospital.

Please let me know when you are going to be there. Maybe we can meet

there. We have to go in sometime next week for the hospital tour and

the pre-op testing. I'll let you know the day after I speak to the

folks who will schedule it all.

With your " week six " being the week of 's surgery, it would be

really something if the boys both were taken care of on the same day.

If so, maybe we can help each other through it. Also, is Zach staying

overnight or is he going to get out the same day like is? Are

you staying overnight in NYC? If so, do you have where to stay? We

are a little over an hour out of NYC on Long Island, and the house is

pretty small, but if we can help, let us know...

Pam,

I am so glad you are happy with 's care at NYU, it makes such a

difference when you feel that you and your physician are on the same

tract!

I am curious about how Dr. Chorney's procedure is less invasive? Are

you speaking in reference to older babies (over six months of age)? Or

what Dr. Chorney is doing vs. the tendon transfer Dr. Ponseti does?

Just wondering!

Hi Donna,

Dr. Chorney explained it but I really don't remember the whole

explanation. I asked my husband and he said that it had to do with

the fact that she actually cuts less than Dr. Ponseti does. My guess

is in talking to others who have had orthropedic surgery in the past

than some doctors will " borrow " from not just one, but a whole series

of techniques that they learn to come up with a less invasive

procedure. A good friend of mine has an orthropedist who did exactly

that with should surgery she had.

I would assume that techniques are refined as time, knowledge, and

skill go on...

As for the age factor, the only thing that she mentioned regarding

age is that she will use general anesthesia on an older child when it

comes to the tendon lengthening rather than local so that the child

does not move about. I HATE and am scared about the anesthesia, but I

can't argue with the logic. She will also do the casting under

anesthesia to get a better cast. Again, can't argue with the logic,

expecially if doing it like this avoids the need for possible future

procedures.

The proceedure is 10 minutes about that does not count the time it takes to

put they to sleep and prepare time so I imagine it will be the same. You

will have to let me know how you all make out. Sorrry we will miss you but

Hi Kathy,

Afraid I'm going to miss you. goes in on Wed., the 21st. The

procedure is an hour (10 mins - lucky you), but it's the same deal -

if he's going to walk, sort of a creative miracle from the Lord

Himself, the surgery has to be done.

As for hotels, you would need to call a travel agency and probably

book in advance. My hubby was a chaueffeur (Long Island and NYC) for

a couple of years and says that there is nothing very close to the

hospital (You would have to travel to the 30's or 40's Streets for a

place.) He suggests that if you fly in to stay at a hotel near the

airport you come in from, that they are pretty nice.

Good luck with the surgery and let me know how it all goes. Also let

me know what you think of the anesthesiologist - That is the one area

we are concerned about in all of this...
