I have had 3 taps- no problems with any of them- I had two with no local

and they were a snap. i DID HAVE A HORRID HEADACHE AND NEEDED A BLOOD

PATCH AFTER HAVING MY INTRATHECAL CATHETER PLACED FOR USE WITH A BACLOFEN

PUMP. i ATTRIBUTE THAT TO THE PRESENCE OF A BIG TUBE INTO MY SPINE THAT

CAUSED LEAKS WHEN i MOVED AROUND (DIDN'T HAVE A HEADACHE UNTIL i STARTED

PHYSICAL THERAPY. l was told at Baylor Med. in Houston that studies had

been done on young soldiers and hydration was the deciding factor. The

troops rested a very short time after the taps. Judy, what is your

specialty area? I am a pedi nurse and have taught in an ADN program for 20

years. Had to stop clinical this yeartR I just can't get around any more

chasing students. What are you doing aBOUT WORK NOW THAT pls IS AROUND.Lavon

Edith,

If you want to avoid the absolutely worse headache you can possibly imagine,

do exactly as the Dr orders. The idea is to avoid any possible leak at the

site of the spinal tap. If you do get any leakage, you WILL get a terrible

headache.

Dear Edith, Good luck on the 4th. Like everyone has said they are not that

bad. I am just the biggest baby in the west. One recommendation is to drink

lots of water. Ask your dr. Take care.

I have always had a headache after spinal taps. Have always had to have a

blood patch to prevent it. They take your own blood and put some into the area

of the tap, and it clots to stop the leak, which is the reason for the

headache. They should do that as a prevention if you have a history of leaks.
