I was a little concerned about this because the first two castings, 's

feet and knees were basically in the same position.

Sounds to me that s feet are just pretty stiff. If there was one thing I

loved most about Dr. Ponseti it was his willingness to be very honest and

upfront. In the beginning with her chances could have gone either way

and he made no attempts to mislead us. It was a wait and see game for the

first 2 casts as to weather her feet would go in the direction that he

needed them to. Believe me, he would have told you by now if it was'nt going

to work. I think for some babies it just takes longer depending on each

babies individual feet. 's first two casts were pretty similar because

he just did'nt want to push it, but after that each following one became

easier and easier. I kept a photo book of each of 's casts as we went

along and I remember reading how hard the first two casts were on ,

very uncomfortable! But those two were the ones that loosened her up the

most.

Also for , a tenotomy time, she had very tight heal cords in both feet.

So after her last casts post tenotomy, there was a question as to if she

would need another tenotomy on one of her feet. This I was told was very

rare. As it turned out, the key to that was her shoes. He said it was

essential for her to wear the shoes exactly as he said and not to have the

shoes off any longer than one hour a day. We only kept them off 1/2 hour a

day at the most and sometimes did'nt take them off at all. It worked! Both

her feet are very flexible now and he is quite impressed with them.

I don't know s whole story so I hope I have'nt said anything you've

already heard, but sometimes reading similarities helps relieve some

concerns.

P.S. To any of you " pro's " with the shoes, how long were your kids in 14-16

a day with the DBB? Dr. Ponseti said she only has to do that for 2 1/2

months and then go to just when she's sleeping. I thought she'd have to wear

them 14-16 longer than that. As great as that sounds, here I go again, all

worried about her feet going back without her shoes!

I believe Rose only wore the brace 2.5 to 3 months for 14-16 hours. I

thought she'd have to wear them longer, but she didn't. I 'tried " to do

it longer (I worried, too), but I know I didn't. Once she started

walking, she really fought the naptime bracing.

The little skunk has started resisting it at night now!!! Can you

believe that?! :) She knows it means bedtime, so I guess that's her way

of saying " Nope " (which she actually does say, too! :))

Holly,

I guess I missed this post the first time around. Sorry.

Our experience was a bit different. Instead of moving directly from

full time wearing the DBB to only wearing it 14-16 hours, we did it

gradually over a course of a few weeks. Dr. Weinstein had us take it

off an hour each morning and each evening for a week, then up to 2 hours

each time, and so on, until he wore it about 14 hours a day. At this

point (mid July 1998), we was wearing it a strict 14 hours a day. At

his next appointment (September 1998), we switched to bedtime and some

predetermined couple hours in the middle of the day (Jakob was not a

regular napper for quite some time). I quit putting it on during the

day in June 1999 since things were getting quite hectic here and I was

forgetting it often. At the appointment after I stopped putting it on

during the day (which was in November 1999), Dr. Weinstein said that was

ok as long as he still wore it at bedtime. Right now, Jakob does still

wear the DBB at bedtime (and a little in the morning if he wants to

" crawl in his brace " ), he wears it an average of 8-12 hours per day (8

on a bad day when we go to bed late and get up quite early).

Thank you and Joy,

Those answers were very, very helpful! I am going to keep the DBB's on

as much as possible (maybe even a little more that he recommended) but still

give her more than enough time out of them so it will help her to learn to

crawl. She's really gotten off to a slow start and has'nt crawled as of yet.

She weighs 21 pounds at 10 1/2 months though also, so I'm sure her

" chubbyness " maybe slowing her down a little.
