Guest guest
Ivana, I am so glad to hear about Valentina's gains! Even though many folks on this list use Essential Fatty Acids mainly to help their child with speech difficulties, EFAs help with so much more than just speech, in my opinion. I don't know very much about how digestion works but I would think that piercing the capsule would be fine. After all, they do sell ProEFA in liquid form (with no capsule). Also, when we eat fish there isn't a mechanism that protects the fish oil from our digestive acids. Like I said, I am just a parent taking a guess at this. I am anxious to hear what others with more knowledge have to say. Have fun watching your little one develop! Tricia Morin North Carolina <Hello, I have taken my daughter Valentina to a physician (is that the word for doctor of physical medicine, the one that orders PT, OT?) last week and told her about ProEFA. She didn't say anything yes or no (I told her the neurologist said yes) but suggested to see a pediatrician in a hospital where Valentina receives her therapy for an additional blood laboratory analyses. So, I saw the pediatrician today, she ordered some tests, but asked me this question (that I do not know how to answer): Is it safe to break (pin) the capsule, because the capsule itself is supposed to keep the contents from the acid digestive secretion of the stomach to be absorbed in the bowels (hope I described it good enough)? What amount of the capsule contents will be changes by digestive secretion (if any)? I will ask this same question on the Nordic Naturals site. In the meantime, I continue to give Valentina one capsule a day, it has been 3 weeks now, and I can see huge changes already. After the first weekend (4 days on ProEFA) her PT said she had much better balance than the week before, and she didn't know about ProEFA. Valentina can now stand unsupported for short periods (30 seconds), is attempting to do that herself (loose her hands away from furniture) very often (at least 20 times a day). She can also cruise of furniture, like side walking, she takes few steps when someone holds her. She also babbles much, much more, with different expressions (ma-ma, ba-ba, ta-ta, da-da, nam-nam, ged-ged), she started to bite and chew really nice (she didn't do that at all before). She can now wave bye-bye, shows where her head is, or a nose when someone asks, and also recognizes many different objects. She still tends to throw everything away (and laughs when she does that), but I was told this is just a phase, even for a typical child. Just to remind you, she is now 2 years old, was born premature at 32 weeks, had bacterial meningitis at 7 days old (that we have to blame for everything), then ventriculomegaly (resolved), microcephaly (smaller head but growing steadily), delayed myelination, developmental delay, strabismus. I want to thank you for this wonderful site, for all the information and knowledge about different things. I learned so much since being the member. Many hugs Ivana, mom to Valentina 2 years old, living in Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro
Guest guest
Ivana, I believe fish oil is put in capsules only because so many people find the oil too offensive to take in the liquid form. The capsule itself protects US from the bad texture/taste and isn't necessary for proper digestion. Congratulations Valentina! It sounds like you have struggled and conquered many physical battles. I wish you continued success. Guest guest
Hi, I'm sorry I don't have a medical answer for your question, but as a Mom, my daughter , almost 2 years old, has not had any problems with the fish oils. I also wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS! Its sounds like Valentina has made some GREAT progress, I hope it continues!
Guest guest
Ivana - Wonderful progress is a short time! As for the contents of the capsule - the ProEFA is also sold as a liquid so, without any medical basis for this opinion, it seem by breaking into the capsule with a pin it would be the same thing as giving just the liquid - shouldn't be affected by gastric juices any more than just the liquid would be.
