Hi All :

Today has been the day I have dreamed about for 3 1/2 years, and of course I

missed it !

My son was working with his Therapist ( we do a Floortime program at home) .

My son wanted a cookie and she was saying to him " I want more cookie? " And all

of the sudden he said " I want More " !!!!! She couldn't believe it !

My daughter was in the room and heard it too !

O.K. Now I am freaked out because I tried to get him to say it again and he

couldn't ..He went back to having all vowel sounds ?

I am so CONFUSED ? Has anyone else had this happen?

Congrats!!!! Don't get freaked out that he didn't say it again.

That's just apraxia. I remember when said " I want more " also.

It was something that our therapist worked on for months. She

typically would say something once, and then you wouldn't hear it

for awhile. Then she'd say it again and start saying it a little

more often, and then it would become a part of her regular

vocabulary. Just remember it is not like a typically developing

kid. It takes them lots of practice to get it into their everday

vocabulary.

congratulations!!! what a great breakthrough!! Don't get freaked

out about not being able to do it again on demand -- you are

experiencing the beauty of apraxia. We experienced the same -

couldn't imitate or repeat anything for a long time - then one day

she would say it and you couldn't get it again. but that's how it

starts... congrats again - very happy for you!!!!

Congrats on the first sentence! Saying something once and then losing it is all

part of the apraxia - don't worry about it, it will come back. Just keep

repeating the phrase or words and keep trying to get your child to repeat it

back to you ( " I want____ " ) is part of the Kaufman method - when your child comes

to you to indicate he wants something, you say " Do you want____? Tell me you

want_____. " Then you help the child say " I want____. " Say it as you normally

would, then break it down into the individual sounds necessary to make the

sentence or word). Josh did the same thing - now he says I want more___

whenever he wants something.

Good luck - keep up the encouragement!
