No - they do not shut down with a small physiological dose. Think of it as a

" booster " or vitamin to the adrenals.

those terrible side effects are only with large doses taken for a long time.

no problem with the small dose.

I have read here a couple of opinions on the adrenal fatigue treatment -

Can I have a couple more? !!!

I've read that some people take the cortef throughout the day - but some take it

only in the morning, so the adrenals can kick in themselves, in the afternoon.

They rest in the mornings -

and - the prednisolne is only taken once/day - and it stays in your system all

day long. If it works all day - then do the adrenals work a little bit all day?

or do they shut down? they would then be shut down all of the time, right?

just trying to make logical sense to this!

I realize the dosage is minumal - so perhaps they do work some all day long.

Does that mean that the cortef shuts them down in the morning? and then they

work in the afternoon? so if you take it all day - what happens?

can I ignore the potential side affects listed for the prednisolone? (sp?) - it

lists being concerned if also taking non-steroildal anti-inflamatories and

hormones-

trying to make an educated guess about which one would be better for me

personally -

Thx! Cris

Cris,

I take cortef, 10mg first thing in the morning, 5mg at 11am and 5mg at 2pm

The physiological dose of 20mg a day does not shut down the adrenals, it

supports them. I think Peatfield recommends taking the higher dose in the

mornings to kick start the adrenals. It works for me

Someone posted this on the about.com mb. Thought it was interesting

for those of you taking meds for you adrenals:

I know exactly two people who got their antibodies down to zero with

their respective thyroid glands intact. One did it on Armour. The

other on Levoxyl plus Cytomel.

What their protocols had in common was the balancing of all hormones

including hydrocortisone. And unlike prednisone, which will also

reduce antibodies, most folks can take low dose hydrocortisone

indefinitely.

But I think the bottom line is that we all need to do what works for

us. It is unfortunately rare to find a doc who is willing to Rx all

thyroid meds. we should not have to find a new doc every time we want

to try a new thyroid med.
