I have also done both methods. I had mild reactions to both - more like side effects from mercury becoming loose in bloodstream - the expected side-effect. I believe both DMSA and DMPS helped reduce my mercury levels. I started with DMSA, taking 100mg every together with cilantro every 3rd day for 3 months. Then started DMPS. DMPS was just too expensive to continue. I have stopped DMSA, since I started Niacin/Folic Acid megadosing therapy with Dr. Abram Hoffer (Dr. Hoffer has written a series of books on this). Although it is controversal, I have had amazing results at reducing symptoms of mercury poisoning (reduced neurological, reduced depression, improved energy, less electrical sensitivity). It reduced my symptoms so much that I almost feel normal. I still have what I believe are turbulance with my thyroid. I attempted to continue DMSA detox, but it brought back mercury symptoms, so chose to switch methodologies and take the slow approach to detox, so I can maintain a clear head and enjoy life. Side-Note: Megadosing of niacin can only be done by prescription with doctor, and needs careful monitoring of liver enzymes. Some say it can impact liver, while others say liver resumes normal enzyme production once niacin therapy stopped. People with diabetes have to be extra careful to montitor insulin levels. Niacin does have the properties to help build GSH (glutathione) levels, and to help remove toxins from fat, so is complimentary to a detox program. It is normally used to reduce cholesteral and open arteries (niacin flush). It has the side-effect of making one feel burning/itching with skin turning red especially when one for starts using it. I have been suffering from mercury poisoning for 5 years, so this is also playing into why I want off synthetic detox, to finally enjoy my life again after so many years of symptoms. There are new studies from Sweden showing that our body is capable of detoxing 50% of mercury naturally one year after having all amalgam fillings removed. So based on this I'm shifting towards letting my body naturally remove more of the mercury, then look at switching back to cleanup what is left with hopefully natural methods. In order to naturally detox mercury, I support my body heavily with vitamins, minerals (USANA - expensive but the best), and cysteine via HMS-90 (viruscontrols.com).
