Hi ,

I think you missed my reply maybe because it is under the subject " weight " ....I

was thinking in terms of weight and exercise.

Micah is reading at a second grade level but still does that pausing, especially

on small words...however, he has never said his brain has stopped working but

occasionally he will say " I'm stupid " , which breaks my heart! The workshop I

went to explained that kids can often remember longer words easier because of

more clues...shape of the word, first and last letters giving them a clue on a

familiar word to them.....I think someone else already mentioned this. The kid

has a good memory and can do great up to a point, but none of us can memorize

all the English we need to be fluent readers and we need to be able to decode

brand new words we have never seen before or shorter words that look so much

like each other e.g. slaps slips sips lips pills ,etc. For these words they

really need to be able to hear where the sounds come in the sequence in order to

read it right the first time....and eventually become fluent readers.

And can I just add here that I love W posts...they are always so

well-written and easily understandable and so thorough. Thank you W!!!

Also....Tammy....I agree with the other answers to your questions about learning

disabilities being at a higher risk with our kids.

Carol
