Guest guest
Hi Nas! Where are you located in NJ? I highly recommend The Summit Speech School http://www.oraldeafed.org/schools/summit/ that my son Tanner http://www.cherab.org/information/familiesrelate/letter.html and many other " hearing apraxic " children in this group attended who are now also mainstreamed and great students as we talked about in our segment of Inside Edition http://www.cherab.org/news/insideedition.html The Berkeley Heights and Livingston school system I've heard great feedback from -not that they are the only two of course. There are so many apraxic and other communication impaired children in NJ -the awareness is way up. You are not alone -there are support sources in each area of the state-as well as in all the surrounding states, that are all needed due to the amount of families. (which is both the good and bad news) Actually I'm pretty shocked nobody else answered you yet. Let us know what area you are in...and welcome! (Just curious -how long have you lived in NJ/this country and where were you prior?) =====
Guest guest
HI Nas: I also live in Hudson County and my daughter who turns 5 next month is enrolled in the Summit Speech School in New Providence. She was in the Jersey City school system for a 1 1/2 years and it was clear it was not the appropriate placement for her. She is severely apraxic, essentially non verbal at age 4 and has sensory needs. She didn't really make any progress in their program, but since being enrolled at SSS since June she has about 75 new words and phrases. I can't say enough about their program and the teachers and therapists. I also know that they are not at full capacity and definitely have openings. However, I had to take my district to court because they would not send her there but I am happy to say I just won my case 2 weeks ago and they will now be paying for her education and transportation and reimbursing me retro to June for all out of pocket costs. It's definitely worth the fight to ensure your child receives the proper services. I wish you the best of luck!
Guest guest
Hi Thank you so much for this information. It sure helps me to breathe easier. I am from London in the UK and have been in and out of the US for the last 3 years since my son was born. I moved to Newport, Jersey City which is Hudson County about a year and a half ago but still feel very new. I read the Late Talker in June 2003 and it is like my bible and has helped path the way for my son. God Bless all of you for all the help you give others. Thanks again Nas
