When we were using the ProEFA, we used to give my 3 year old the

capsule, let him hold it in his mouth for a minute or two (as this

makes it soft and slick) and then have him swallow it with chocolate

pudding, yogurt, or even ice cream. ly, it's difficult to teach

them to swallow it, but it's better than fighting the " it's YUCKY!! "

battle! and better than getting stinky fish oil on clothes - but

that's a whole different thread!

[ ] Another Pro-Efa dosage question

Hi Everyone,

Since the subject of Pro-Efa dosgae has come up - does anyone give

their toddler the soft gel caps? I pierce one and give him half of it

in his drink. We started about 10 days ago and since there has not

been any side effects, I'm going to move up to a full capsule. (I

called Nordic Naturals and they said a full one is fine for him - he's

26lbs.) Is one capsule what you guys who use the gel caps do?

Thanks -

I would like to know more about this " proefa "

I have a 4.5 year old son with apraxia. He also has had seizures since

birth, and he is developmentaly behind. He is in speech and OT. I have heard

a little about proefa, but I don't know enough about it. I would like to know

more, and see if maybe it could help my son.

Also, does it affect other drugs? He is on Tegratol, and I am wondering if

the proefa would enterfere with the effect of the tegratol?

Hello, my boy likely has apraxia too and i very recently found the

apraxia website. If you go to the article

www.cherab.org/information/dietaryeffects/efawhatsthat.html you can

read all about ProEFA and its effects on speech etc. If you look

through the information page on the site, there are other really good

articles and sources of info. Try another article - about Carnosine,

another dietary supplement that shows really positive results. My

boy started ProEfa 11 days ago and we see an improvement already, so

does his speech therapist! I ordered Carnosine yesterday.

As far as interfering with meds, you can check with your doc. My

boy takes Zantac and his doc said its fine with that. ProEfa is just

a kind of oil, its not a medication. But again, you should check with

your doc - even if its just so that he knows you're trying something

new. If there is a big improvement, he can pass the info along to

other patients. The only thing that I had to change is that I had

been adding Canola oil to my son's food for the extra calories (he's

underweight and hates to eat). I had to stop that because other oils

can slow the absorption of the ProEFA oil.

Just to let you know, it comes in 2 forms, a little jar of liquid or

a bottle of capsules filled with the oil. I've been adding 1/2 tsp

(same as one capsule) to my son's spinach and he will eat it (pretty

funny - a kid who hates to eat WILL eat spinach with fish oil!!!)

I've read that once a plateau is reached, you can up the dosage to

one tsp or 2 capsules.

Anyway, the articles are a great source of info and I wish you the

best of success with your son

Hi everyone!

Due to the confusion of what dosage of the oils since the

introduction of the ProEFA oil in the bottle about a month or so ago

(vs. the capsules which are what most of us have used for years up

to the bottle oil) below is a reply about dosage of straight oil

from developmental pediatrician Dr. Marilyn Agin

http://www.cherab.org/information/speechlanguage/advisoryagin.html This email

is in regards to the posts that

stated that Nordic Naturals recommended dosage of the oil in the bottle is - 5

ml per 5 pounds (while the ProEFA capule bottle's recommended dosage state " one

capsule daily " )

To clarify -5 ml is equivalent to one teaspoon. Around

just 1/4 a teaspoon of ProEFA oil will be around the same as 'one' capsule

of ProEFA since " 1/2 teaspoon of ProEFA oil is close to the equivalent of

about 2 capsules of ProEFA " Confused yet?

Sadly -it still does appear that unless NN offers a dropper that

clearly has lines that state " one capsule " " two capsules " or

something like that as a guide as I suggested -that with use of the

oils -those of you using the straight oil will no longer be able to

share with all of us accurately -or even know yourself - what dosage

you are giving your child you are finding to be " too high " " too

low " or " perfect! " You will only be able to estimate. The best we

can advise now with the oil is that " 1/2 teaspoon of ProEFA oil is

close to the equivalent of about 2 capsules of ProEFA "

As I always say -brand name does NOT matter -only

Formula

Dosage

Quality

However we can use brand names as an easy to understand guide.

In our group we have found ProEFA -Efalex and EyeQ to be the three

best Omega 3 -6 oils, with ProEFA being the best so far overall due

to " it works best at low dosage " . With ProEFA -here is the dosage

which we as a group have found to be effective over the past number

of years with hundreds and thousands of children, and that has been

posted over and over at the CHERAB list. If any of you can figure

out a great way to translate this to the use of straight oil without

the capsules as a guide -please let us all know. In the meantime -

will one of the pharmaceutical R & D people in this

group design an EFA patch already so we can just slap that on our children

instead of all of this?!!

The only dosage we as a group know to be effective is to start with

one capsule of ProEFA a day -then go to two capsules of ProEFA a day

when you see a plateau in about 6 months to a year -then instead of

going to three capsules of ProEFA a day when you see a plateau again

in a year or more -you stay with the two ProEFA capsules a day and

add one capsule of ProEPA.

Just a reminder that the ProEFA oil needs to be refrigerated once

opened. Also once opened it has a shelf life of 2 months. ProEFA

capsules have a shelf life of almost 4 years -do not have to be

refrigerated once opened -and can be carried in your pocket if you

want. You can do this with the oil but you will smell funny.

I chose the ProEFA capsules over the liquid. As always -they work the best at

the lowest dosage.

" ,

Obviously common sense would prevail here to know that the dose

quoted by someone (who?) at Nordic Naturals was in error. They have

a new liquid ProEFA with EPA 296 mg, DHA 198 mg and GLA from borage

oil 80 mg per 1/2 teaspoon (equivalent to 2.5 ml) as the

recommended dose which is close to the equivalent of 2 ProEFA caps.

Obviously, no one could imagine giving much more to a child. On the

Nordic Naturals website they have recommendations for dosage of

being 5 mg (not ml) per lb. of combined EPA+DHA for a child 1.5 to

15 years. That would mean a 30 lb child should take 150 mg of

combined EPA+DHA which actually is a very conservative dose. That

comes to less than 1 cap of ProEFA or about 1 ml (1/5 of a tsp.) of

the new liquid. Let's not make a federal case out of this--someone

probably mixed up their mgs and mls. It is not funny, but at the

same time the parents who wrote to the group list realized

something was wrong. Since this is fish oil though, even if a child

had a megadose, he/she would probably get diarrhea and nothing much

worse. As a physician, I have seen more horrible mistakes in

medication dosing--tragic ones. Parents should always be on their

toes and question what appears to be off-base. I do hope the owners

of Nordic Naturals make sure that their staff offers accurate

information to the public.

Playing devil's advocate here. :)

I am more inclined to think that the oil dosage is more accurate.

Currently I am squeezing oil our of the capsule and aside from not

knowing if I am actually getting all of it some days if not careful

it squirts either on my counter or worse on my clothes. So 1/2 tsp

then mixed into whatever seems like I'll get know exactly what I am

getting without the mess.

I do agree though that the 2 month expiration once it is opened is a

drawback. I haven't purchased the liquid yet but will let everyone

know how it goes.

In terms of the Pro-epa, has anyone else experience any side effects

from it? My son activities were bordering on tic like. This came on

quickly and stopped within 24 hours of discontinuing PRo-EPA. So for

us that won't be in his list of supplements!

If I were using the liquid proefa, I would start out with 1/4 tsp of liquid

proefa. If you squeeze out the liquid of 1 capsule of proefa into a syringe

it is equal to 1/4 tsp. (this is what I found when I used proefa, but I now

use eyeQ. I use 1 tsp of liquid eyeQ, which is almost equivalent to 1 proefa

capsule or 1/4 tsp of liquid proefa. The difference is that eyeQ has EPO

instead of borage oil and the epa to dha ratio is higher in eyeQ than

proefa) And I'm sure I have really confused all the parents new to fish oil

supplements!

I'm about ready to begin with the liquid proefa so I'll be in touch to let you

know how it goes too. I also had trouble when I tried adding the epa to Evan's

2 efas. We tried one full capsule of the epa and he started having behavior

problems and tantrums. We quickly took him off with plans to try it again but

with a smaller dose and then gradually build up to 1 capsule.

Hello ,

I wrote to you about Kayla and the amount of Pro-EFA that I should have been

given Kayla. I see from this email, I should have started her off on just

one capsule. I finally did see the speech therapist that you told me about

in my area. After six weeks of trying to meet up, we finally did. I took

Kayla off of two capsule for a week and just started her back on one capsule.

I will see how her behavior goes and any words. Hopefully with the new

speech and the Pro-EFA we will see something.
