Hi !

For those that have never been to a real life support meeting -(I

heard from -Khalid's mom from New Mexico who flew in for our

Inside Edition taping and spoke to our NJ group that) it is such an incredible

feeling to be

surrounded by others and know you are not alone. Even though I

couldn't possibly have felt alone in NJ unless I wanted to lock myself in

the bathroom -it was exciting for me to be at the first Late Talker

Network meeting because the room was filled with parents and

professionals -and so much energy. It's obvious that research/media

and other big things are in motion already for this state -we have

such a great group!! I am so looking forward to the next meeting -

and I can't think of a better person to run the Late Talker Network

than Kim (Kimmie) Vallin!!

I'm looking forward to getting to know everybody -my only suggestion

is that next meeting we need snacks and duckie tags so we can mingle

and get to know each other! For anyone looking to start a support group -do it!

The meeting brought forth a compromise that I believe was in the best interest of everyone. There were issues brought forth by the board concerning behavior's that weren't appropriate and Vern likewise had an issue with the board's handling of an event. All said ,the association should be stronger for coming through the fire.. so to speak. I personally thought that several of the Doc's were eloquent and passionate in their appraoch to the issues. Thanks Danno. I also came away with the feeling that things would

soon be getting back to normal, whatever that is. I look forward to

a positive future for our association. I would especially like to

thank those who drove long distances yesterday. I am not sure if

anyone can top Dr. Kehr, LeGrande is a long way to come from for a

couple hour meeting. Hopefully he didn't fall asleep on the way

home.

Meeting last night

So what happened at the meeting last night?s. fuchs dc

All,I cannot resist the challenge of trying to  capture some of the drama and magic of last nights showdown in the suburbs( a secret location in vill). Here in one room gathered approximately 40+ high energy doctors and lawyers to decide the fate of our fragile OCA. 

By now you have all heard that the result of this unusual gathering of docs and attorneys- the rehiring of Vern and the survival of the OCA to live another day.  I wish to shed a little more light on just what happened last night for those that did not have the privilege to witness it.

  Lets just say for openers that last night the OCA board showed there true colors-and those colors were most emphatically true courageous blue.  I must admit that going into the meeting I had doubts about this board but I left assured that we in the profession have much to be proud of in these board members.  They showed real class when the chips were down by acting to  resolve a complex and vexing problem-that is Vern's termination as our lobbyist.  I thought Dave Duemling. Ed Hacmac, Don Ferrante , and Steve DeShaw showed outstanding  leadership and eloquence in leading the board through this difficult process of healing and moving forward.

There were many other 'stars' in my opinion.  Dan Gatti deftly handled the job of moderator as only he could probably do.  For that matter seemingly the entire Gatti Law firm was present spreading good will far and wide. I also commend Attorney Jennings who gave sound advice behind the scenes to help us reach a solution. These guys were magnificent.

But wait there was a cast of many more here- folks who through there humility, passion for chiropractic,  and  eloquence helped heal the wounds and hold our Association together.  Folks like Bryce Milan, Minga Gurerro, Mike Vissers, Schmidt, and many others. 

Finally there was Vern Saboe-the man at the center of this crisis. Vern displayed enormous patience but it was his flexibility and humility that probably helped win the day and secure a workable solution with the board.

So there you have it , just one docs view of an historic event in our young OCA playbook.  I believe it is historic for the reason Bryce Milan stated at the close of our meeting: For once our state's doctors had a major political brawl and then decided to make peace and stay together as one organization  rather than split and go separate ways.  This is a sign of maturity and I hope it inspires docs who are siting on the fence considering joining the OCA to jump in and join this exciting new State Association. Together who knows what we could do!

I believe nearly everyone left this meeting filled with excitement and great hope for the future of Chiropractic in Oregon.  I know I certainly did. Merry Christmas Indeed !  I have already received my best Christmas gift-a united OCA -replete with Vern  as our lobbyist.

That is exactly the image that I held in my heart all day Tuesday and then some.

That is exactly what those of us who had our applications filled out and waiting needed to hear.

I am confident that everyone learned something from this situation:

One, that it take a Whole Village to raise our organization.

Two, that the members of this esteemed organization are paying attention.

Three, that unilateralism is always a mistake and will draw a reaction.

Four, that we folks are good people who sometimes make mistakes and need to be forgiven.

Five, that our organization can weather a tsunami, call in the clean up crew and get back to the business of taking care of the extraordinary chiropractors in this state.

Six, that we have in our midst some of the finest, most passionate professionals who will go to bat for ALL of us.

Count me in and thank you to all who were part of this meeting, the December meeting, and all future meetings.

And thank you to the Gatti Guys who were there for us, once again.

And thank God that Vern Saboe is our CHIEF LOBBYIST once again.

After several years here in Oregon, I decided to join the OCA in November. I

don't mine telling you, I was a little concerned whether I made the right

decision, when I attended my first general meeting in November and witnessed the

many events subsequently. Since I have practiced for many years in another

state, I have observed the politics within that state of the various chiro.

" camps " , which at times have greatly hindered the profession from moving

forward. I must say I am impressed how intelligent and centered many of you

have been in resolving this current issue in Oregon and pleased that I joined

the association.

We all have our visions of where our profession should be moving and these

should be expressed by all. However, in my opinion, collaboration is a big key

for our profession to move forward in any regards. Thanks to all who gave of

their time and efforts for this endeavor.

passion for chiropractic, and eloquence helped heal the wounds and hold our

Point of clarification: Vern is not the chief lobbyist. He is hired back part time and is receiving 1/2 his previous salary. M is hired as the association's full time lobbyist. Neither lobbyist is designated as being 'chief' position; at this time. Or at least that wasn't part of any outcome from the 12-21-10 meeting that many of us attended 6:30 PM to about 11:45PM. The decisions from that meeting allowed Vern to be temporarily rehired. Doctors may be asked to make donations directly to fund Vern's work so he can continue with 'full-time' efforts. For now, this is separate from OCA dues or PAC monies.

Once a new board is 'seated' they will decide whether to let Vern's status 'stand' and make any further decisions on lobbyist contracts. Those issues will most likely be discussed in mid to late January or when the newly elected board takes it's seat. Having said this; Please don't freak out when reading my post. I am not sending this to cause a panic. This is intended to fill in what I consider to be important blanks of the other announcements. I firmly believe there was progress in that meeting; Huge progress. We had a room full of doctors that agreed to disagree without dissolving a spectacular state association. I was personally overwhelmed by the good will I felt from most of the board members. There was zero discussion by anyone to walk away to form yet another association. We need to stick together.

If you are a current OCA member, please stay closely involved as elections will be coming soon. Your nominating committee is preparing a list of candidates to present to the membership. We need to fill 6 more seats on the board. If the lobbyist situation is of concern to you, please ask the candidates about this BEFORE voting. If you wish to keep a lobbyist of your choice, it would be in your ultimate interest to ASK all candidates on the form WHAT they intend to do about this situation. If you have concerns about further hiring of Tonkin and Torp or any other issues; it would be advisable for you to ask the candidates and current board members that were carried over; what they intend to do.

The board can't make decisions without you, the membership, letting them know what you want and need. We should not blame the board further for anything if we don't take the time to offer opinion or help.

My advice to those who care to take it, is this: If you're not a member of the OCA, please join. If you don't have the money to join, please call the OCA office and see if there are provisions for financial hardship memberships. If you are still reluctant to do either for whatever reason you have, consider donating money directly to the lobbyist of your choice in order to increase efforts at the legislature. We need everyone, in any capacity they feel comfortable with to stand united as we help the entire profession advance.
