Guest guest
Well I agree on the full moon theory. Political correctness gone amuck. In myoldest daughter's school, she is in Jr. high, even the weekest student was given a chance to be on the honor roll. 80 average in all subjects, even gym, which grades are given on attendance, being on time, participation, you get a 99, so with that thrown in, even a straight 70 in major subjects, that 99 puts them on the honor roll. 90 and above is the high honor roll. I think it is a great motivator, to see their names in print. The kids that are in skills classes, the lower performing children, many of them are on the high honor roll, no difference between them making the honor roll than the kids in accelerated that make the honor roll. It's like banning dodge ball. Or water balloon duck duck goose, I have been told by some mothers that it is too violent! Taking things to the extreme. Just my opinion. By the way kindergarten kids LOVE water balloon duck duck goose!
Guest guest
Now that all is just taking things a bit too far. A little competition can be good for kids. and yeah it would make sense that if you get rid of the honor roll, posting good work, and get rid of spelling bees that you have to get rid of all teams, cheerleaders, sports, and activities. I mean we cant have the kid who auditions for choir or a show band get upset because they didnt make it. When I was in school, not that long ago either, being a " smart kid " and getting on the honor roll was a bad thing. We were the geeks, nerds, and " losers who had no lives " . But we were the ones the other kids looked for when they had trouble in school. and when they found out that the select few of us who made the high honor roll (3.7 or better GPA) for 3 consecutive semesters were offered 4 tickets tickets to any 3 Pittsburgh Pirate home games. And we got them for free! My parents could never take the time off of work to take me, so I'd get the tickets and take a couple of friends who didnt make the honor roll. One of thier parents would drive and I got us in. :-) Kids just have to learn everyone has thier own abilities. while I had a high GPA and made honor roll almost all the time, I cant draw to save my life. So I had the brains to win at the science fair, but not the artistic ability to pull off a nice looking display to do it. I barely squeaked through in art classes because I just couldnt do it. Luckily most of the teachers graded on technique rather than results. One of the girls I knew in school barely squeaked by in English and Math, but in Art she was brilliant. She now has a lot of her paintings here in a local gallery, and that's her job. She sells her paintings and does commissioned work for people. If the scholls are trying to make kids think that everyone is the same by eliminating things like that, those kids are in for a terrible wake up call when they get into the real world. What would be next? No company is allowed to hire workers because those who dont get hired would feel bad? Companies aren't allowed executives because people who arent would resent it? Oh yes, and Trump and Bill Gates have to give away all thier money because it makes people who dont have money feel bad. Toni
