Guest guest
I have not heard that. My son trained at 3.10 and we got past the fear of the potty by 4.3. It really depends on each kid and their needs. My darling daughter who is typical is still not trained in #2 and is 3.8. So much for girls being done early.... Keep at it if he is interested and seems physically able. (long periods of dryness) denise > Oh I'm having a coronary here...is that really true? Guest guest
My apraxic twins potty trained at 2. I wasn't even going to start potty training them, but they started pulling off their diapers. I bought 2 potty chairs. peed in it on the first day. just followed everything that did. Within 2 weeks, they were both peeing in the potty. who is severely apraxic was even trained at night by the time she was 3 1/2. was 5 1/2 before she was trained at night. was the first to be daytime trained, and the last to be nighttime trained. They potty trained much easier than their brother who was not apraxic. I think it just depends on the kid, but not every apraxic kid is 5 when they are potty trained. It sounds like you are on a good start. Suzi
Guest guest
was potty trained at around age 4 years old. I think a lot depends on verbal ability and how sensory issues might be effecting the child's ability to feel the sensation of having to go. Tricia Morin North Carolina < ...is that really true? POTTY! if we are out, and when we are at home or at school he goes by himself. Now about poo poo, this has been a real problem for us. He has only gone once and is terrified of it! He wears a diaper for overnight and usually poops once I smack on his diaper to sleep. So in other words he just goes once a day. I try to push it at night when he is ready to go, like I'll say lets go to the potty and he will strongly tell me NO! So I don't want to push it, I've heard that when you do that they can regress. He is 3.5 now and is at 100% with peeing, so for now I am letting the pooping go.
Guest guest
Don't know if that's true or not - but I have an apraxic child - my fourth - she potty trained at about 3yrs 9 months and she took the lead in our family!! There were 3 boys very close in age before her-- 1st one very verbal very early and he potty trained at 4 years and 3 weeks; next boy at 3 years and 10 months and next one at 3 years and 9 1/2 months. I was never big on " potty training " -- I let them do it when ready and let them be in control -- when they decided to do it, they did and it was a one day thing... no running to find a potty immediately when out, hardly any accidents etc. They also were out of diapers even at nighttime within a couple of weeks. But, my point really is in our family the apraxic one was the earliest!!! [ ] potty training - not until 5yo?!?!? Oh I'm having a coronary here...is that really true? Guest guest
Hope is almost 3 1/2 and is just starting to really " get it " . For the last few weeks she's been telling us she has to go after the fact. But she's starting to tell us she has to go before on occasion. It's been hard since when she says potty it comes out " pa " , which could be several things. But she picked up on when I'd tell her to " come on let's go change your pants. " So when she has to go, or she's already gone, she comes and gets me and says " pants " . We head to the bathroom and I grab a new pair of training pants on the way. If she hasn't gone yet she sits on the potty for a while. Sometimes she'll do something, sometimes not. But we try. At preschool there are days when she comes home with 2 stickers on her chart. The kids get a sticker if they havent' had to be put in time out. The ones who aren't potty trained, which is all but 2 in her class, also get a sticker when they ask to go potty. It's the same drill as at home. if she's clean and dry she sits on the potty. Sometimes she'll do something, sometimes not. The other day she changed tactics on me. she came to me and said " tink " , which is Hope-speak for stink. I thought she poo'd in her pants. she hadn't gone yet so she sat on the potty. Well she was sitting there for a while and when I thought she was about to give up, she had gas. Hubby was walking through the hall and heard it on the other side of the door. Hope thought this was just hilarious and laughed herself silly. All I could think was at least she knew she had to do something. :-) Toni
Guest guest
My apraxic 8 almost 9-year-old son Cameron didn't potty train until he was 7 1/2, uggghhh and it wasn't from lack of trying...my other son trained in 4 days through the night when he was 2! Finally bribery worked! Personally, I think every child is unique and different. Who knows you may be lucky and he'll train much younger than 5, at least I hope for your sake! Guest guest
Hi , Khalid my oldest child, global apraxic (was then non-verbal and low tone) had potty trained at age 2 1/2. Determined to be well informed, I got a book about potty training- (no internet 14 years ago) Funny thing about that was, before I had even finished reading the book, Khalid had basically trained himself within that week. A few years later that book of course came in handy for my other two children, who were not at all so easily trained by age 3 My youngest son is also apraxic. My non-apraxic daughter was the toughest of my 3 children to train. So not to worry seems like your son is off to a good start here. Mustafa > Oh I'm having a coronary here...is that really true? Guest guest
Jordan is 4.5, and trained at 3.5. I put a pull up on him at night until he was 4, just as " insurance " , although he rarely if ever woke up wet. The reason that 's said, is because many times children with apraxia, also have hypotonia. The " low muscle tone " sometimes does not let these children feel the sensation that they have to use the bathroom. Many of them also have problems with constipation (again, the low muscle tone). Thus the reason they potty train so late, is because they don't feel the urge to go....until it's TOO LATE. Don't be discouraged ..... just keep up with him. I found with my little guy, if I did the potty thing routinely (first thing in the morning, then an hour later, an hour and a half after that, before leaving the house for any reason......etc.), that seemed to make it easier. He then began to realize when he DIDNT have to go....so it was easier for him to recognize when he DID. The first week I think I was asking him every 10 minutes " do you have to go potty? " I probably annoyed not only HIM but everyone around us! I think with these children, it's just something you have to stay on top of until they " get it. " The low muscle tone causes them not to have the same sensation that most kids would feel, and KNOW they have to go potty. Thus the thought that they are older when they finally " get it. " HTH ~Karyn [ ] potty training - not until 5yo?!?!? Oh I'm having a coronary here...is that really true? Apraxic children don't generally potty-train until 5??? Guest guest
Lindsey was potty trained at three. We tried at 2 ,but it was to much pressure on her at school. At three she did it her way when she was ready. She spent alot of time with no clothes on though, this seemed to help. The pullups did not help. Guest guest
, When I mentioned that I have heard and read that 5 is the magic age for Apraxic Children, I meant being fully potty trained. That means no diapers at night, no consistant accidents, bowel controll, etc. I do agree that Hypotonia and Sensory Integration issues tend to complicate the process at times.
