Just wondering if there were any parents our there who had a child

with oral/verbal apraxia and also a G-button. Due to my son's severe

prematurity and lung issues, he needed to have a G-button placed in

his tummy. Just wondering if there was anyone else out there I could

talk to about progress, etc.....

Colleen,

My son, Chase 3.7yo, has G-Tube (mini-button) for GERD. He also has

oral/verbal apraxia, which contributes to his inability to chew and

manipulate food in

his mouth. He is just beginning to eat very small amounts of solid foods.

He's made great progress over the last year.

Feel free to talk away I'm here,

Kris

Dear Colleen,

My son has been on a g-tube since he was 8 months old (he is now 4).

We also had a fundoplycation done at the same time. Unfortunately,

started to gag and retch (as a result of the fundo) so he stopped sucking on a

pacifier (or anything else for that matter). He became so orally defensive that

it has taken us years to get him to where he is now (he is eating puree

(mostly yogurts and puddings) and we are down to one feeding at night). I wish

someone would have told me back then, how important it was to continue to force

a

pacifier or something in his mouth to continue with the oral phase, but we

just didn't know. It has been a long hard road, but we hope that one day

will be an oral feeder. He also has significant speech issues (he has only

sounds, no words).

Sincerely,

Heidi
