Guest guest
Hi Tracey... I have three children...my oldest (TARA 8yrs.) is from a previous marriage and she has NEVER had any issues with talking....my middle child (NATHAN 3.7yrs.) has Apraxia... then last but not least is my youngest (JACKSON 15mnths.) we haven't had him looked at but I feel that something may be wrong...he hasn't had any first words yet, although he has recently started to babble...but no " words " as of yet. This could very well be a paranoid mother " looking " for something too...just due to his older brother having apraxia. Just on the safe side I'm keeping a close eye on him anyway!!! Good luck on whatever you decide to do!!! Mandy

Guest guest
My 3 1/2 yr old apraxic son is by far the greater challenge of my 2 kids, but my daughter also has a few speech issues. She was a 'late talker' and was not really intelligible until she was over three. Her articulation was very poor but did improve as she got older, w/ no therapy. She still has trouble w/ her R's, and sometimes L's. She is now in 1st grade and they are about to evaluate her again to see if she qualifies for speech therapy-- she was 'borderline' last year so we chose to wait and see if she would progress on her own. Since she hasn't, she may qualify for speech now, since by age 7 they are supposed to have R's mastered. She is extremely bright and is reading at a 2nd grade level, but her R trouble is starting to affect the way she tries to spell words-- 'wele' for really etc--so i hope she gets some therapy this year. I sort of feel in my heart that if I had a third, there would be some speech issues in that kid as well! But i guess you never know. Every child comes w/ their own set of circumstances. Good luck w/ whatever you decide! -Lis, Brittany and At 02:46 PM 10/13/2003, you wrote: >Hi! >This may have been done before but I wanted to just take a quick >survey of the amount of people who have more than one child with >speech issues. Guest guest
I had my daughter evaluated by EIP when she was 17 months old b/c she rarely said Mama and nothing else. My son said about 10 words at that age. They determined she had mild hypotonia and a speech delay and she began S.T. and O.T. (I started her on Pro-EFA 4/10/03 too!). Today she is doing great! I think she'll be finished with therapy be the end of the year. Guest guest
Hi , I have 3 children. My oldest, Katelyn 12yo, was a late talker; Although, by 3 she was talking above her age level. Chase 3.3yo is apraxic and Gage 2.0yo is not talking yet. He has about 6 words (ma-ma, da-da, bye-bye, ut-uh, yum-ney, awe-da for all done) at this point, but he babbles all the time. We have not had evaluated yet, we're hoping he is just a late talker. Good luck with your decision. Kitty [ ] Who has 2 or more kids with speech difficulties? Hi! Guest guest
I don't know how helpful this will be but I have 4 children. Firstborn had/has major speech, language issues and sensory issues, second born required some help for the " s " sound only in first grade, third child had expressive language delay with sensory issues and fourthborn had no speech or language issues. Guest guest
I have a 5 1/2 year old who has apraxia and a 2 1/2 year old diagnosed at this time with a phonological disorder. (Also a 7 year old with no speech problem) On Apraxia-kids website there is research going on in Pittsburgh for Molecular genetics of apraxia. The study can be mailed to your home to complete. Downfall--The results of the study will not be shared with you. I am going to participate in the study to do my part for science and our children's future. I assume though, if you are deciding to have another child but are concerned about them, you could seek genetic counseling at a nearby hospital. Guest guest
Jeni: I have 3 kids. The oldest has no speech issues. My middle daughter had speech delay/articulation issues and ADHD. My youngest is the one with verbal apraxia and doing better each day. The study sounds very interesting, however, I would definitely want to know the results. It would not help me to decide any more kids for my husband and I, we are done! But I think our 2 speech delayed kids deserve to know. They both know about their respective issues, but not whether or not it is genetic and may pass to their kids. Perhaps when they get older, that issue will come up. Please let us know how it goes and if it is tough to do. Kim > I have a 5 1/2 year old who has apraxia and a 2 1/2 year old diagnosed at > this time with a phonological disorder. Guest guest
Tracey, I have 2 children with apraxia, 5 and 4. The younger child also has hypotonia and also receives physical therapy. Since mine were so close together I didn't even realize that my oldest had apraxia, we just knew he wasn't talking. By the time we got the diagnosis, at age 2, my youngest was 14 months. We got him evaluated and began intensive therapy right away. So the only good thing about having two with apraxia, you already know the signs and know what needs to be done to get therapies started. My speech therapist thought I was crazy when I said that I thought my youngest one had apraxia too but both children have profound speech impairments. Good luck on your decision.
