Guest guest
Loose stools can sometimes be firmed up with zinc supplements. I used to be on a gfcfkids website and MANY of us used zinc to aid in reversing diarrhea. It worked for Ian until I added carrot juice to his diet (our big offender). I used 10-20 mg/day. Opened up the 25 mg capsules and dumped some in to milk, water or juice. Zinc picolinate has a good absorbtion rate. I gave it at night and not with other foods. If stomach upset occurs you can give with a little bread of crackers. Low levels of zinc are also related to deadened taste buds. Some parents find that a zinc supplement will stop the eating of dirt, sand, crayons or chewing on things. It definitely worked for us in this category. Ian stopped eating dirt and sand almost immediately (he was about 18 months old) If you decide to try it, start with 5 mg/day and work your way up to 15 mg. I know some people gave their kids much more than that... I think the RDA is about 4 mg or 8 mg. Can't recall. RDAs don't always mean much but I have a hard time giving mega doses of anything. My daily input! Pam p.s. Ian had an AMAZING ST session today. He hadn't seen this SLP since he started on the ProEFA. He was repeating so many words. The SLP was amazed! I said nothing about the EFAs in case it doesn't happen again. It was a fun day!
Guest guest
Pam: This whole zinc thing makes total sense. is deficient in zinc, but has too much copper, not too much, but there is not a balance there. His doctor put on his supplement list some type of water for him to drink which has zinc in the water. We haven't tried it yet. But it makes sense that he is deficient in zinc and has loose stools? Maybe I am reading too much into it, but definitely worth giving it a shot! Thanks for sharing. Kim > Loose stools can sometimes be firmed up with zinc supplements.
