Guest guest
Well not really bragging, but letting other parents of newly diagnosed apraxic children see that things get better.....from not speaking at even 3(my identical twins with apraxia) to now being in a regular Kindergarten and separated for the first time and doing great..... Their report cards are wonderful....they have nearly all 1's --the highest--on their report cards....address, telephone number, counting etc....all skills are being met....yes, the teachers have " work adapted " the identification of letters as at times they cannot fully understand when they (the teacher) points to the letter -for example- C that they are saying c or g...so they may ask them to find the c or find the g..... Yes, we have a long road of speech ahead....but with the Pro-EFA and private speech the extended school year and speech in school, they have amazed all of my family and friends....their receptive lang has always been fine....but never babbled, were serious and as long as we are on the current subject....they were on colase (in their formula bottles) for quite some time as constipation was something they also dealt with....again was that another sign of what was to later be diagnosed that goes along with apraxia??? I hope this gave many of the new parents on this list some feelings of " it gets better " ....the neurologist's finding and report were so bleak and depressing....and as I am sure I wrote some time ago.......the story of my friends that had children that were before 3yrs of age and were speaking 2 languages and the twins were not able to be understood in English....so I eventually began telling them that they (my twins)were speaking russian and didn't they know that??? Remember to try to keep some HUMOR with you at all times!!! ....and I think it was either or commenting on the huge element of HOPE that is needed in life and what gets us through and the belief that things will get better...this is so important as I feel our children can feel that through us. too.......of course, the laughter and hugs help too!!!!! Happy Valentines Day to All...hey, why doesn't NN make those fish pills into tiny heart shapes? I am going to apply to the marketing dept.... Guest guest
Kathy! You have every right to brag! Us parents are dealing with SO much that when something " good " happens, you have to celebrate. Parents of kids with no special needs usually take our little celebrations for granted, but it is definitely cause to brag, celebrate and anything else you want to do. This is truly inspirational also. Although I have been working with my son for 2 years now, this type of story brings hope to me as well as the really new parents on this board. And, even though we see great improvements in with the EFA's and school speech therapy, I still wonder/worry about his future. I really want him to be in a mainstream kindergarten class when he is ready, and fit in with his peers and be accepted and happy....just like all the other parents probably. This story shows that it can happen. One question.....did your twins start kindergarten at age 5 or 6? Also, I just got 's IEP report sent to me, since his IEP needs to be re-written (it has been one year already)..and he had 4 goals on his IEP. Two goals were for fine motor skills and 2 goals were speech oriented. He is making sufficient progress in the fine motor goals and has achieved both speech goals. Let me just say that we celebrated that in our house! It was interesting that just one year ago, the speech goal was for " to have 2-3 word utterances with little prompting from the teacher " .......the speech therapist stated that " has 10 word sentences, spontaneous! I can't wait to see that this years goals are going to be. Take care and congrats!
