Good for you wondering, listening to your Mommy's heart & asking!!! The breast is NEVER empty. There is what is called, on Site production. This is the fatty hind milk that babies need to have growth. 3 minutes is usually not enough time, I am tempted to say never enough time, for a baby anyway. Just keep doing what you are doing & all will be well. Congrats on having your baby thrive on YOUR mommy milk!! Cristina
Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I didn't know there was a name for the milk that is constantly being produced - on site production! I used to wonder how they could say that a woman's milk dries up, or that they don't have enough milk (although I guess this does happen to some ). I was always amazed that, after fully weaning each one, my breasts would still produce milk for a LONG time - months afterward, i would give a squeeze and there was that milk! It really is pretty amazing, the whole bf thing! What I used to do was hand-express to see how much flow was still there after the baby finished nursing----if it was still squirting out pretty strong and steady, I figured we must be in good shape - does that sound right? I have never had a lactation consultant per se, but I did phone LLL quite a few times over the years. Joan
Guest guest
Joan, My milk stayed for a long time too. I think the problem is that the milk " dries up or isn't enough " but that the milk supply never properly gets established. They struggle on for as long as possible but if they don't get the milk established eventually the baby grows out of what they have and the cycle of supplementation has begun. It happens so often that instead of doing whatever we absolutely have to, to get the milk flowing, we instead turn outside ourselves and start giving supplements. Which ends up defeating the whole process. Wendi Re: well Iguess Breastfeeding is going better than I thou... Guest guest
, I am sure that is true. It is so sad that bf isn't an accepted part of our culture. It shouldn't be a choice but just what women do. Wendi Re: well Iguess Breastfeeding is going better than I thou... I'm sure that this is exactly what happened to my SIL because of misinformation....formula and not nursing on demand.
