Guest guest
I just did the video evaluation, and was very pleased! She called me right away, and also called Lindseys speech pathologist to go over the results. She had very good suggestions and also confirmed Lindseys diagnoses of oral and verbal apraxia. Guest guest
> I've been surfing Kaufman's website and noticed she has a video tape service. I seem to remember someone on this list mentioning this and actually using the service. If that's correct, could you PLEASE contact me. I'm considering calling tomorrow!!! Also considering ordering her basic kit. > > THANK YOU! > LouAnne > (who feels a glimmer of hope!) > >
Guest guest
I think the Kaufman cards are really good but I want to add that your child has to like looking at cards:) 's school therapist who also works at Kaufman (lucky me- or should I say ) uses " real objects " with the same goals as with using the cards. Just a thought- definately isn't into cards although will do some drills with them. It's a lot of money to shell out if your kid doesn't use them- good or not. Guest guest
Hi Amy and all! is an advisor to CHERUB and Speechville so I know her very well and have spoken to her in depth about the cards which I believe are brilliant in theory and reality. http://www.cherab.org/information/speechlanguage/advisoryboard.html You are not supposed to use the cards alone, at least not with a preschool child. There are some preschool children that may just like to work with cards -but you can't expect cards alone to hold a preschool child's attention as long as you want to do therapy. All 's therapy sessions look like one big play date! You should combine the cards with games, puppets and toys, laughing, funny voices -play. It should not look like drilling at all even though repetition is there big time. Sure you can use the cards together with toys that are the actual objects in the cards if you want -but you don't have to -and I know most don't. Most use the cards while playing a game, and alternate between playing the game and working in a fun way with the cards. Some have the child work with a card and attempt the word first, and the " reward " is that they get another turn at the game, etc. Or some break things up with just playing. And if you think the Kaufman cards can ever be boring -hey it's therapy. As my mom always says " There is no such thing as a boring subject, just bad teachers " So if you know what your child needs to do (and the Kaufman technique is one that is highly recommended for apraxic children -not like we have that much out there to go on or anything!) then make it work and make it fun. If anyone wants a comment from -I'll ask her for it. But I know she will say " The kit was originally developed for use by professionals who know how to use it " And for anyone that knows you will know that she does know how to keep it fun! And we can too -I know many that do -all of us can. And for all the questions/suggestions about oral motor exercises for teaching a child to blow bubbles and have more facial expressions and all....there is an entire chapter in The Late Talker on these type and other type of exercises. Actually if you don't know how to work with the Kaufman kit and keep it fun -you may pick up a huge amount of tips from the book too. I highly recommend the cards to all who have children with any type of apraxia and are not blind. Hope that helps! " Kaufman has been treating children with apraxia of speech since 1979. She realized that existing materials were just not quite right for the methods she found most effective. So....she designed her own materials for both evaluation and treatment. What is the Kaufman Method? The Kaufman Method is a way of teaching children with Apraxia of Speech the easiest way of saying words until they have increased motor-speech coordination. They are actually taught the shell of words without including too many of the complex consonants, vowels, or syllables which make a word too difficult to even attempt on a motor basis. This teaching method is a reflection of how young children attempt " first words. " For example, the word " bottle " begins as " ba, " progresses to " baba, " later becomes " bado, " and eventually, " bottle. " From the very beginning of infant speech, there are very few " whole " words pronounced. The Kaufman Method gives children of all ages a way to attempt difficult words using word approximations, and refining and reinforcing these attempts toward whole target words and phrases. It is a systematic approach and one that has been an extremely beneficial, logical, and an efficient way to tackle developmental apraxia of speech. Other methods are also integrated in the Kaufman approach that have been successful with adults who have lost the ability to speak. Many of these techniques have to do with the way in which the child learns cues to remind them how to say the word. The combination of these techniques comprise the Kaufman Method! is highly regarded as a national expert in her specialized field of apraxia of speech. Her center is also becoming well-known for their work with Autism, PDD, and auditory processing disorders in children " quotes from http://kidspeech.com/ =====
