Guest guest
Thanks, Rick, for that...you are, as always, the Voice of Reason. This list has always been, since its inception (and I was there) a group of caring, concerned diabetics trying to help each other. From time to time there will be a newby who is argumentative, gets insulted and leaves in a huff...but for the most part, we really care about each other I've always considered the folks on this list my Diabetes Family, that's why I've stuck around for five years. Speaking of " family " -- Tootie, how're you doing? When you don't post for a while I get worried. Vicki << I wanted to chime in briefly on the topic of attitude... EVERYTHING on this list must be taken with a grain of salt, and a pound of consideration. Even if all of us were doctors (who would we complain about then... <g> ) there would still be differences of opinions and different approaches

I've been lurking--newly diagnosed, scared to death, needing help and dismayed at the the recent posts. Not surprised, mind you---but there is too much of this on the internet/in life--I'm not sure I can take much more. I don't feel well and it is upsetting. My goal for this week: Drink more water and exercise. There's a lot of good information here. Thanks.
Guest guest
Hi ...sorry there's been some negative stuff here lately...bad timing for you. It does happen now and again...but I think the problem is resolved now. So please let us help you. What specific questions do you have? I'm dealing with some 'Rage' at HMO. I feel that I have been treated very callously--but I've got bigger problems now--rather Life Threatening, so I need to Let the Rage--Go. From what I have been reading on these boards--I've been exhibiting symptoms for about 10 years. I would mention these things to my very young doctors and they would brush them aside. One of the most frightening has been the skin problems---(Can't spell today) ...Excema?, fungal infections of toenails--20 years and now in my fingernails, lots of skin problems. My maternal grandmother died of diabetes--very painful ordeal. I've known for years that it seems to skip a generation and I figured my turn would come. It has. I have so many problems and the medical community dismisses me---for their convenience. In a few weeks I will drop the insurance--the costs have gone out of sight--what will I do then? I'm trying to apply to participate in some clinical trials. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Are you saying you've presented these to your HMO doctors and they haven't investigated? Have you had an A1C test? Do you have a meter and have you been testing you BGs? Well, I guess that's enough questions to start with... Vicki

Unemployed--no $$ to buy the testing equipment--or RX. So--I was supposed to see the Social Worker--programs, financial aid, etc--excuses, excuses, excuses and some rather unprofessional remarks. So--I've been trying to do what I can--diet,etc. Things are getting worse--a lot worse. Infections-skin and yeast. Even as a child I had skin problems and infections---which I have now read are symptomatic of predisposition to diabetes. I've been reading quite a bit and may have scared myself--that has been known to happen. Starting to have problems with my feet--that's where the Exzema has been the worst for years. The dermatologis--quite young-- has been dismissive when I tried to ask questions about this--told me I had cea--here's some cream--and 'See Ya'... ***** i.e--- I believe the practitioners are instructed to take a 'Firm' stance with patients...I've been to the corporate headquarters several times. Oddly enough I was called to participate in a study about Physicians' Communication skills--for this HMO. I was paid $100--as were 20-30 others--so that's one reason for the exorbitant costs. My customer comments are free---albeit meaningless. That's what I mean that there have been symptoms that warranted further consideration---begging, pleading-- to no avail. Many times I have been told to trot myself to Behavioral Health---the worst of all the departments. I assume they categorize me as Hysterical, Unstable woman---menopause. Probably have some good laughs at my expense. And, still I am a human being---with enough sense to know changes in my body indicate malfunctions of some systems. Prior to the diagnosis of diabetes last Oct--in August, in fact, the Mental Health practioner insisted I take a particular psychiatric drug that I later learned can facilitate the development of diabetes. When I confronted him with this FYI--he told me I had a complex personality disorder. That's the sort of healthcare I've received for the past few years. !@#!! Guest guest
, Me too! Exactly the same situation - I was a bit scared off from posting as well, after some of the posts I saw!! Here's hoping it will clear the air a bit! Kirsty If you and I were always to see eye to eye, then one of us would be unnecessary. Guest guest
Hi, , sorry you're having so many problems with your HMO. It's really hard to get good control when you don't know what your BG numbers are. Many doctors have free samples of meters. And I understand Walmart has a store brand that's fairly inexpensive as are the strips -- but it still costs something. You need to tell your doctor that you can't afford the prescribed medications. Many places have " compassionate care " provisions. Somewhere in my archives I have a website for financial help for meds. I don't have time to check for it right now...maybe someone else has it...or else I'll check tonight when I have more time. I have to go to work pretty soon now. I believe someone else suggested a place you could go for lowcost or free meds and testing supplies. I hope you can check this out. You can lower your BGs by lowering your carb intake, which I suppose you already know if you've been lurking for a while. Try to avoid any products made with grains -- breads, pastas, cereals. Also avoid rice and most fruits except in very small amounts. All of these will raise your BGs, which are contributing to your problems. It's unfortunate that the starches many low income people eat because other foods are not affordable are practically " poison " for diabetics. Here's a list of pretty lowcarb veggies from my archives. Spinach Cauliflower Broccoli Summer squash (zucchini, crookneck) Spaghetti squash Mushrooms Asparagus Greenbeans Cabbage Sauerkraut And of course lettuce and avocados which aren't a veggie but a fruit .but they're definitely lowcarb. I have a large mixed lettuce salad with avocado every night with dinner. Check back with us later today. And good luck. Vicki I have been officially diagnosed--last October. Unemployed--no $$ to buy the testing equipment--or RX.
Guest guest
These are only my opinions for discussion purposes only: For info on skin problems, I personally would try the archives, search and discussion board at -- http://askwaltstollmd.com/wwwboard/wwwboard.html For diet needs, I personally would try: The books, available at many libraries: Protein Power and Protein Power Lifeplan both by the Drs. Eades (-(adequate protein, moderate fat, low(er) carb)-) The discussion boards for this diet: http://www.eatprotein.com I may have other links for possibly free meds - let me know if you are interested and I'll post any I can find. Guest guest
Dear Group, I've been sick with various ailments since February. I have had chronic, severe hip and knee pain. Then my pancreas quit (all those painkillers likely contributed to that). I was hospitalized three times, including a week in ICU. My HbA1c of 8.8 indicated an average glucose reading of 355 or so. I'm now on insulin (N,2xday. I was up to 40 units/day but am cutting back now because I'm seeing several readings in the 120s. Because of the pain and the weakness (all my nutrients were being flushed out with my urine ... I was in ketoacidosis), plus the weakness that comes from losing 28 pounds in three months, I spend very little time on the computer. Also, I'm cleaning up from a violent windstorm and hail storm. Oops, gotta run. The roofer is here. Group hugs, Susie
