I had a vestibulectomy over 10 years ago. I helped with some

localized areas of pain, but not the overall burning - that is still

present. Recovery is a bit long and uncomfortable - about 2 weeks

before I could sit comfortably. I wish I knew about some other

treatments before I tried the surgery. I have never been pain free,

before or after the surgery. I believe I have had more relieve from

other treatments. Hope this helps.

have seen dr wesselmann in maryland with Hopkins Hopsital and she

referred me to see him for a vestibulectomy. My next question is has

anyone had one? And if so, did it work? how long was the recovery?

today , the overall vulvar burning is still escrutiating though

throught the vulvar area - I am going to see doctor weiss in san

francisco who can help with that- pudendal neuralgia- it is physical

therapy, have you done that.?? Question for you?? do you have pain

from intercourse due to your surgery? from the local point itself?

Hi Nichole, I have seen Dr. . I was in his VV trial at U of R. I can honestly say I was not impressed. He seemed to care more about the trial then getting me better. Please don't get me wrong he is a fine doctor with a welth of knowledge, he gave me a better place to begin my journey...but I asked my primary OB for another specialist and Dr. Amstey is also here in Rochester he is one of Dr. s competition is also a VV expert. He actually told me more backround info on VV and found I was alergic to the Lidocane cream. Which is a staple in s treatment. I had such bad reactions to the study drugs that I almost gave up hope. With Amstey I found great strenth in having some one say that this is more than a physical problem it's as much a mental hurrdal as it is physical. It effects the body, mind and soul and should be treated as such as well. I am now on a nortriptaline(probably spelled wrong) and working with a thrapist that has been

working with VV patients and Amstey for years along with PT that I haven't started yet. Amstey does vestibulectomy's as well. He told me if the meds didn't work that the surgery would be next so far the meds are working. You may not even need the surgery. Use the surgery as an absolute last resort. I had surgery for displaysia 8 years ago and have never been right since. Don't worry it wasn't or Amstey. might be a good place to start...the jury is out on having him do any of my surgery. Maybe if I had skipped the study and went straight to treatment I would have had a better outlook on him as a doctor. Study or not my $ is all in on Dr. Amstey. If you want more info on eather I would be happy to give you #'s and addresses and all the info on what's here to do while your here in Rochester. Good Luck. Let me know. Thanks, Ellen

Hi . Sorry I didn't reply sooner.

The vestibulectomy is designed to cure the situation where you have

ultra-sensitive nerve endings localized to a small area around the

vestibule. The surgery removes the skin with those nerve endings and

patches you together with skin from the vagina that has fewer nerve

endings.

If you have constant burning, the vestibulectomy will *not* cure

that. See the collection of papers by Hope Haefner in the " files "

section.

The constant burning is treated with nerve pills like Elavil,

Neurontin, Effexor, and others that we have discussed. It is caused

by your nerves overfiring.

I had both problems, the localized pain and the constant burning. I

had a vestibulectomy on September 21. I *still* have the constant

burning but my nerve pills keep it under control. I also have the

muscles of the pelvic floor in a spasm so that is treated with

physical therapy.

I can have sex now if I am really careful but I still have the

constant burning and the muscle spasm so I still need to take nerve

pills and have physical therapy.

Baby steps.
