was $21.95 for 90 capusles. we give my son who is 2 yrs 4 mos, 1 per

day and we cut it open and poor the liquid from the capsule into

applesauce on a spoon.

Just wanted to add that if you get it automatically delivered every

other month, there is a 10% disc and free shipping. Also can suspend

a month if you get backed up. I think you have to call though the

first time to give them the billing info.

A can of sardines 3 times a day is not very appealing.

[ ] EFA questions

Has anyone tried to get the EFA by simply eating foods high in EFA? I

know about the problems with mercury in fish. I'm just wondering if it

is feasible.

This was my dilemma while pregnant. I was scared to take fish oil

supplements (but ended up doing so, I suppose, because I took prenatal

vitamins with EFAs--one soft capsule of EFAs in the morning and the

vitamin pill at night; it didn't say fish oils on the ingredients but I

guess that's what it was). The research I did on eating actual fish

scared me even more! I thought I could take flax oil and eat walnuts

and avocados but then I learned that the body has to convert the fatty

acids in those (vegetarian) foods, which is really inefficient (I think

something like only 10% gets converted in typical people and for some

it's even less). So, I guess to answer your question, it would be

possible if you could get a lot of clean, unpolluted fish to eat along

with the vegetarian sources of EFAs and of course you'd have to cut out

the processed foods and sat fats. I try to do as much of this as I can

(I type this as I eat a canolli...) but I still don't see anyway around

supplements.

Don't fear! (get it? :o) Archive on this one.

About mercury and fish oil (vs. eating fish)

" Fish oils have been tested for various heavy metals like mercury

and there has been enough preliminary proof through studies, as well

as theory from reputable sources, that as I've posted many times

I've heard that the oils from fish may be the safest way to get the

benefits of the EFAs without the toxins due to the fact that mercury

etc. binds to the proteins/muscles of the fish.

" Measurement of mercury levels in concentrated over-the-counter fish

oil preparations: is fish oil healthier than fish? "

" CONCLUSIONS: Fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and their

consumption is recommended to decrease the risk of coronary artery

disease. However, fish such as swordfish and shark are also a source

of exposure to the heavy metal toxin, mercury. The fish oil brands

examined in this manuscript have negligible amounts of mercury and

may provide a safer alternative to fish consumption. "

And one other thing to keep in mind for those like me who do eat

both fish and take fish oil, there are toxins in the fish you eat

that won't be in the oil For example while mercury etc. binds to

the protein (muscle of the fish) so it's not in the oil of the

fish. From what I've read -the largest problem with fish oil itself

is rancidity. Oxygen and fish oil doesn't mix well.

Consumer Reports had this to say (most likely because toxins in

many cases bind to the protein and most oils are not tested for

rancidity)

" Consumer Reports tested 16 top-selling fish-oil pills which, like

other supplements, aren't closely regulated by the FDA.

Consumer Reports' Metcalf says the test results are

reassuring, " We found that all 16 brands that we tested had the

amount of Omega-3s that they said they did, which is good news. And,

we don't always find that with supplements. "

Since fish can contain toxins, Metcalf says Consumer Reports also

checked the supplements for purity, " We tested for three kinds of

toxins that often appear in fish - mercury, dioxin, and PCBs. "

Testers didn't find significant levels of toxins in any of the pills

tested, so you don't have to worry about contaminants. "

OK, so my next question is how do you get your kids (some of whom also

have sensory issues) to take the dang stuff?

My dd (20 months) doesn't chew, and is very particular about her food.

All she eats is stage 2 babyfood thickened with cereal. And at that,

only fruit blends with meat mixed in (forget the meat/veggie combos).

But she loves the taste of citrus. She licks/sucks on orange rinds,

etc.

So we mix the liquid ProEFA into her baby food. She has only been on

it a few days, but doesn't seem to notice or care that it's in there.

I know that others mix it into yogurt or OJ.

Please I will like to know the dosage on Efas for 6yrs, 7 and 8. I am going to

keep this dosage info till by son is 8. He just turned 6 last saturday. So far

he's been on 2 capsules since 4 yrs. I will appreciate if this is answered. It

is going to be my second time of asking because it was not answered the last

time.

Thanks

Well, that was kind of the point of my original message. There is

no " right " dosage for any age. As has pointed out, fish oils are

not a vitamin but rather a food. If I were you, I would go as high as

probably 8 or 10 capsules per day, as long as my son was not having

any bad side effects and I was seeing some results. Two capsules is a

very conservative dose for any age. My daughter just started 6 per

day, and she is 3.5 years old.

Hope this helps!

We've topped off at the equivalent of 9 capsules a day. Has anyone used

higher doses than this? -claudia
