Guest guest
So what's the usual dosage of melatonin you all are giving. Is it something you give every single night. My son is sometimes wild at bedtime also. I'm assuming it's safe, are there any side effects? Guest guest
Deborah - I take melatonin myself on occasion, but I wouldn't give it to my kids without talking to a ped first. I also really wouldn't give it to them on a regular basis, but perhaps to set a schedule. It is a synthetic hormone and might permanently alter the body's production of " regular " melatonin. Finally, if you decide to use it, there are LOTS of different amounts in the pills. I would find the smallest dose (from the most reputable co) and use that. Also, it might be possible for you to get it from your doc as a prescription bc they have been using it for jetlag, etc.. Who knows?? Ok - one last thing: I JUST started giving the kids epsom salt baths (5-6 " water + 1/4-1/2 C epsom salt). They sleep like a DREAM afterwards. The magnesium is calming to their system (I won't purport to know chemically why). Worth the $1.98 for the bag! Good luck! Marina > So what's the usual dosage of melatonin you all are giving. Guest guest
, My daughter is 4 years 3 months. She just hit 29 lbs! I think the GF diet is helping. What do you think the melatonin really helps? I am so confused by all of this!marcy
Guest guest
Do you give this in addition to the night time formula that is part of NVD or instead of it? My daughter is 5 and 35 lbs and she takes 1mg of Melatonin a night. I have the tablets so I put it in her night-night juice and she drinks it no problem! It takes a little while to dissolve (it has a coating on it) but it dissolves up real good. She takes it to help her stay asleep and IT WORKS for us at least. When I forget to give it to her she is up and down all night but when she takes it, she goes to sleep she stays asleep. Now she might be getting more of a benefit from it other than staying asleep. in VA
Guest guest
Marcy, We tried the Nighttime formula and since that has ran out we wanted to try to see if the melatonin supplement would work just as well. I only but his weight so if someone out there had a similar weight they could recommend a dose. I know that melatonin helps with sleeping and staying asleep. I saw a previous email where someone else asked about dosage for their child and but in their childs weight. Thats all. --- rdavis900@... wrote: > > > , > My daughter is 4 years 3 months. Guest guest
Melatonin helps with a couple things: - helps sleep - helps prevent AD We do not give my brother any Melatonin, as he takes the Nutrivene-D Nighttime formula which has Tryptophan in it - this works VERY well for him. If we don't give him the Nighttime formula he is very fussy the next day & takes 2 naps instead of one - he doesn't get as good of sleep during the night without it. Guest guest
I do not believe there would be any need to give this in addition to the Nutrivene Nighttime formula -- see Carol's post about Tryptophan converting to Serotonin & then Melatonin. Guest guest
That definently would make alot of sense Carol! The pathway is Tryptophan to Serotonin to Melatonin. You need sources of tryptophan to start the process- see this site foods high in tryptophan- http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient & dbid=103 It also lists other nutrients needed to convert. I can't find the article stating most of our serotonin is produced in the gut, will look later again for it, but many who have improved gut function have noticed an improvement in the symptoms of low serotonin as well. This article does say it's produced from foods. http://home.bluemarble.net/~heartcom/tryptophantoserotonintomelatonin.html It would make all the sense in the world that symptoms of low serotonin in DS could be directly linked to crummy food absorption and poor gut function that is not allowing the foods to be digeste and or converted to what is needed for serotonin production and absorption. I know one of the pleasant side effects of SCD was vastly improved SLEEP. :-) So would make sense to fix the root of the problem and then provide the basic ings so the body can produce it's own. Low serotonin can also cause constipation. Some people have used SRRI's for constipation in DS. A bit of over kill I think when diet could cure it naturally, not to mention if you have that many problems, what else is the body missing limping along with such a malfunctioning gut?
