In the course of researching for my book, I've only found one other person

whose child was given brain scans to determine if there was a problem.

At the advice of one of our counselors, we had a number of scans (all of

them expect a SPECT scan) done. Some showed slight anomalies in our son's

brain. But it wasn't enough for the docs to say that it was the cause of his

problems. Of course, he also had infantile convulsions and a number of head

injuries that may have influenced the recommendation.

Has anyone else had these brain scans done on their children? Why or why

not? Are doctors not using this technology? Do they not know about it?

I've read a number of you say that you just can't get counselors to listen.

We didn't have that problem so much - Thank the Lord. But, they sure didn't

have a clue to his BPD when he was in his teens so we could start treatment

early.

A few years ago UC Medical Center gave my daughter a CT scan to look for

complications of a concussion. She was talking to some friends behind her in a

lunch line, had turned around and walked face first into a brick pillar. She

lost consciousness a few times on our way to the ER. I guess it was normal

enough: they sent us home about half an hour later.

UCD Med Center was the only hospital that ever gave her a scan. Kaiser wouldn't

bother-- although she had a 4th concussion after falling at a school dance last

year and was exhibiting bizarre behavior. They wouldn't even run a blood test

to rule out drugs and alcohol. In my experience, Kaiser doctors don't want to

spend that kind of money and time on someone with a " mental " illness. They also

don't like to believe something physical could be going on. As soon as they

look at your records, they make a judgement that any symptoms you have are " all

in your head " --even if you have witnesses to back up your account.
