Guest guest
Kelli, Funny, but I hear the same thing from my hubby about holding . I agree that these kids will be very strong. I was frustrated at first because he seems so strong-willed...but now that I see what he's having to go through, it's a blessing. He is truly a gift from God in every way...and I'm reminded more and more to treasure every moment! Guest guest
Dear Kim, I am sorry to hear that has a blister - darn it! It seem to be a common problem. I had Eiza in really thick socks and I switched to an in between sock- baby gap's infant socks have worked the best for her - her feet are still really tiny. We put neosporin on the sore and then gauze etc.. I would just check it every night. We would give her a bath to soak off the bandage and then let her kick around and air it out for an hour or so. I attached a picture of what Eiza's blister looked like. We e-mailed it to Dr. Ponseti when it happened. It might give you something to compare to. Keep me updated on 's blister - it should get better soon! Take Care Becky and Eizabella (10-1-99)
Guest guest
Becky, That's exactly like what 's blister looks like! Thanks for sending the picture for reference. We gave him a bath, put hydrogen peroxide, neosporin and a bandaid on it last night. I was thinking of taking his brace off an hour in the morning and an hour at night until this heals up. I didn't get to do that this morning, though, because I had a Bible study...but I did talk to a nurse there that said that the keeping the neosporin on it would help. He's doing much better today. He was real cranky yesterday, I'm assuming because of his foot...but he's in a much better mood today. Guest guest
and , I'm so sorry to hear about 's blisters. r had one on his heel for about 4 weeks. He never had any on his toes. I ended up calling the doctor to see what to do. You may want to do this also. You feel so badly when your baby is in pain and it takes you a day to figure out why they're crying so much. Anyway, I put hydrogren peroxide on the blister and then put a bandaid on it treated with neo-sporin with pain releiver. We changed the bandaid every day to day and a half. It took 4 weeks to get completely healed, but r's blister was the size of a pea and really oozy - yuck!! I wish you the best. Hopefully 's blisters will go away quickly. A little infant tylenol every so often helps too. Have a Joyous Day! Guest guest
Driggers At about 2 months into the 24/7 use of the DBB, developed a round raised welt a little smaller than a dime on the top part of his foot about where the strap crosses. If the past, when I have gotten blisters on my feet from playing basketball, etc, I have often used surgical tape to wrap around my toes so I could play during the next week or so while it healed. Otherwise it hurt too much to try running with blisters. I went down to the store and got some Dr. Shoals corn pad or bunion pad that had a hole cut in the middle. We stuck it over the raised welt to give some padding around it while reducing the pressure on the sore. We continued the use of the DBB and within about a week it was pretty well healed. > We are experiencing our first blisters from the shoes and need some > advice. Guest guest
I'm really surprised to hear he is able to kick the db's off even with them laced and buckled. That makes me wonder if you are getting the heel seated as deeply into the shoe as it needs to be. Not seating the heel was a problem when my son was in AFO's early on, but since they were made of a clear material, I could see it and correct it. With the db's using a plastic device (what are those things???) for slipping on dress shoes at the heel works pretty good, Wal-Mart didnt' sell them but had a supply hidden back they would give away free if you ask for one...I asked for 4! LOL! -- (they are used to me coming in there for strange foot wear requests by now) as does making sure the leg is bent at the knee and the foot flat on the floor as you buckle up the db. Providing you have the foot seated in the heel area -- kicking off the brace sounds like a problem you need to bring up with your doctor because something isn't fitting right (possibly) and if not fitting, it's not workign right, either. 's blister ended up needing oral antibiotics to heal and it's still present, but no longer infected. It's been present on his heel for over a month and threatenes to flair up on occation. I have lined the heel of the db first with mole skin, and on top of the mole skin, I cut pieces of padding that form a convace area, holding the foot slightly away from the back of the shoe which gives the blister area a little free space (so it's not directly in contact with the back of the shoe). This has made the most difference in 's lack of reoccurance regarding blisters on teh heel, but he continues to get swollen big toes. He too is large and has fat feet. The only other suggestion I just now thought of is I wonder what would happen if you used socks that have a no-slip sole on them -- that little rubber stuff painted on teh bottom of the sock? so they couldnt' slip out as easily, but again I don't think it's normal for the foot to sllip otu to begin with. would have to break his feet to get these dudes off...they just don't slip! Just make sure the blisters do not get infected! had to go barefooted for a week while his healed up -- that meant no db's either.... s. Guest guest
, Do 's feet seem to stick out the end of his shoes??? That is the best way I know to suggest getting bigger shoes. Jakob went through 2 pairs the first year he had the brace. He has had 4 pair of shoes total on his brace and they start out quite large. You say that he started wearing the shoes only during naps/ night about a month ago. Before this, did he wear them full time (23-24 hours)?? If he wore the brace all the time, did he kick it off then or is this something that has started with the shorter time? Personally, I would not suggest putting the shoes on without socks. I am not saying this is wrong, but we were told to always use socks. Maybe you could try some different socks (thicker or thinner depending on what you start with). As for the blisters, if you can get some moleskin (maybe ask a localorthotics place). Place the moleskin with the sticky side in the shoe where his toes are. Do his toes seem to be crammed because the shoes aren't wide enough? I know Jakob's smallest 2 toes on both feet tend to curl in and under toward the center (I hope this makes sense). I try to make sure his feet are flat (including the toes as much as possible) in the shoes before tying and lacing them up. This toe has always been sort of crammed under the others in his shoe because 's feet are pretty wide (he is a big boy -- over 20 pounds at 5 months). We are not sure how to treat these blisters. He may need bigger shoes. We don't know. Please write back with similar blister treatments or when your kids went up in shoe size. Any comments would be appreciated. and D.
