Guest guest
Hi everyone, I just joined this list. I have a 14 year old son ( Ty) who has CF I think? He had a pos. sweat test at 18 mo and was treated at the local hosp then at 9 he was admitted and re tested and tested neg. then they genotyped him but this was before they had discovered the varaints and he tested neg there also so they refused to treat him unless he was actually sick. He has yearly broncitas, pnomonia, weight gain problems ( before the neg sweats he was finally gaining weight on pancrese). Weve lived in the midwest very rural and had no contact with a CF center. This month we moved to a biger city in Washington, cross country and they have a CF center and he will be going there next week. Our new next door neighbor has a child with CF and they are introducing us. Ty has lost over 10 lbs in the last 6 weeks and altho most time only has a mild caugh unless its winter, he's starting early this year. He also has schizoaffective disorder bipolar. so is on meds for that. the broncodialater evelate his mood too high and cause him to be psychotic. So thats where were starting from. Im fairly ininformed and out of date with info about CF and I know they have made big changes since 1992 when ty quit being treated. I guess were hoping for a clearer answer this time. I also have an older son 16 that is schizoaffective schizophrenic. We have never had any contact with other families dealing with CF and hope to learn from this group. if anyone has any ideas or information on being dignosed and un dignosed and dignosed again please let me know. have a good night cheryl
Guest guest
Cheryl, Welcome to the list. Your story is disturbing. I think you may have a good malpractice case. Have you talked to an attorney? I'm a lawyer but I don't do malpractice work. I simply cannot believe that a child was treated with such reckless disregard for his health. Anyone who knows anything about CF genotyping knows that you cannot use it to eliminate CF as a diagnosis because of all the unknown genotypes. You should sue. Guest guest
Hi I know we have spoken on the other lists but I think its great you are doing both things! I personally dont do the b/c thing and we let God control our family planning......for us it happened quickly as you know, but there are others it hasnt. GOD IS IN CONTROL. When I found out I was pregnant too soon (accd. to my surgeon who called me a moron!) I was getting terrified. But God has taken this lil baby and kept him the whole time and helped me eat so he could grow big and me stay small. I LOVE IT! When you trust God you cant go wrong, JMHO! Guest guest
do your research and know everything you can pack into that head of yours!!! listen to your doc. it is good if you can wait, do your best because even when they tell you that you cant have kids before...things start working unexpectedly. accidents happen and we live through them with or without incident. stick around. you can get lots of info from this group. julie Re: Intro Thank you for the information. I really appreciate all views on this. I was hoping that 6 months was ok to wait but maybe not. I was writing trying to find out if a year is the normal to wait. I have waited for 12 years to have a baby and all my life to be thinner. So I guess waiting another year for a baby won't kill me but all the extra weight will. Guest guest
Hi . My name is Patti , I had my surgery last Nov 27th and I have lost 76lbs so far, I too want a baby so bad, but my surgeon highly recommends waiting for 1 year, to lessen the risk to the baby, I totally understand how hard this wait can be, my husband has tried to get me to just see what happens but I know that that is not the best thing for the baby or me, so we have 9 months to go. I just wanted to wish you lots of luck on both your surgeries, and welcome to the group. Patti 11/27/00 open RNY/Fobi pouch down 76lbs > > > > I would like to introduce myself. Guest guest
HI There are many factors that affect when it is good for you to conceive. It's not a standard 12 months coz it has to do with rate of loss and total loss you are hoping for. than there are all the other family planning issues that anyone should consider, size of family, age, economics, etc. My surgeon originally said 12 mos than revised that based on how great my loss and labs were. Since I was 40 we did not think it was wise to wait any longer. I conceived at about8-9 mos post op and had an incredibly healthy pregnancy. I agree with the fact that your surgeon's reco is important but I think there are many factors that should be considered and you and your husband should decide what is best for you. Happy trying. Guest guest
cant they do both surgeries at once? that would seem the best instead of putting you out twice in that short time frame. as far as a baby, i would wait. i got preg 3 months out and i didnt have any trouble. it caused great, great concern through the whole thing though. welcome and stick around. julie Intro I would like to introduce myself. Guest guest
Hello, I am not sure how to email you privately but I think I am okay in forwarding this info on the list. I am also from the Twin Cities. My 22 yr old attends DBT in Eagan at BHSI, Behavioral Health Services Inc. The number is: . I also have wondered if it would be helpful to start a support group for us parents of BPD children here in the Twin Cities area. If there is an interest I would be glad to find a space and time. Good luck. Let me know if I can be of any other help. K. Intro Hi listers, My husband and I are parents of three beautiful daughters, ages 15, 14, and 11. The oldest daughter has a new diagnosis of (probably) BPD after two hospitalizations. The first was for depression, anorexia and cutting behavior, and she's currently hospitalized for a suicide attempt last week (slashed her wrists). We knew that the ED was going to be long-term and luckly that seems to be under control, but the discussion of this new piece (the BPD) is pretty over-whelming. We've only been dealing with this for a matter of months, but we see in front of us what could be a very long row to hoe, and it feels pretty scary. The hospital staff believe she had a pact w/ another patient who is currently hospitalized with her, and she denies it. She was seemingly just fine and then within the hour the paramedics were at our door, so this is bizarre and terrifying. The long-term piece is so scary-- if we can get her that far without her being successful at a suicide attempt. They're recommending DBT and I'm supposed to be researching treatment options. Any encouragement, recommendations, or ideas would be really helpful. I'm just starting my " homework " on this piece. I live in the Twin Cities, so if anyone has local treatment recommendations, please contact me privately. I'm glad you guys are here. We found the ED bb's extremely helpful. This really does feel like a different country, but I guess, like they say on the ED bb, " Welcome to the club that no one wants to join " . :-) Thanks, B Send questions & concerns to WTOParentsOfBPs-owner .
