Debbie,

Yes, I want to comment on that vitamin K shot too. At LLL today, our leader

made a comment that she felt it was important to prevent intra cranial

hemorraging in new borns...especially bfd newborns. Something that formula

has which prevents this that is not found in breastmilk...one of the only

benefits...lol. Just make sure to make an informed decision. This league

leader is pretty knowledgeable and is a Lactation Consultant profesionally

too. She is pretty into the " all natural " kind of stuff, so this made me

think...

revised birth plan...

Ok ladies...tell me what you think...i think i have included all i

will...i am an easy person to get along with! LOL If y'all can think of

anything else i need to address please let me know K?

Thanks!---Debbie

We have prepared a birth plan to help you understand our concerns and

wishes for the labor and delivery of our child. We think you will find

them easy to live with as they are not too demanding. The main reason of

this birth plan is to make clear to the staff what i would like to have

done in the event that my husband is not with me and my mother is. I do

not want her making ANY medical decisions of any kind reguarding myself

or my baby. ** Also she is NOT to get her hands on this birth plan.**

For Labor....assuming that labor is progressing normally...

**No shave or enema

**I would like to be able to get up and move around freely without being

hooked up to EFM the whole time.

**If the need arises for the baby to be monitored, if it is possible, can

it be done intermittently so that i can still be mobile?

**I would like to have an epidural.

**I request that I be given no demoral.

**I would like for my husband, Mike, and my friend Jeanine to be able to

stay with me for the duration of labor and delivery unless the need for a

section comes up. In that case, i would like for my husband to remain

with me if at all possible. Also, if I need a section, I would prefer to

stay awake during the delivery.

**I would prefer to not be tethered to an IV during the entire time and

would prefer a heparin lock instead just in case something would require

a fast IV.

**I would like to be able to drink and have light snacks if possible

during early labor. I have low blood sugar and need to keep my energy.

**In the event that my husband is not with me, my mother will be and the

nurses need to be aware that she is to make NO medical decisions for me

or my baby no matter how small and insignificant they may be.

**I give permission (request, actually) for the nurses to dismiss my

mother from the room during my labor if they see she is aggravating me.

** I do not mind an episiotomy, if i need one and expect a local for pain

relief during stitching.

**I do not mind having an amniotomy or having pitocin used on me as long

as i get to have the epidural very soon after. I have a very low

tolerance to pain.

For the baby.

**I would like to give the baby her first bath. And i would like to do

this on the day after she is born. Of course i will wash her head and

her feet after she has been footprinted.

**I request that she be given NO BOTTLES unless medically necessary and

with my informed consent.

**If not medically necessary, i request she not be given the Vitamin k

shot but that she be given the oral drops instead.

** I would like for her to remain with me, in my room, during my stay at

the hospital.

If there ever comes a time when she NEEDS to go to the nursery, i would

like to go with her.

**I request that she be given no pacifiers.

**I request that my mother not have any rights or say in what the baby

needs to have done if the event arises that she isn't with me.

** While being transfered to the mother baby unit, i would like to hold

my baby and take her straight to the room we will be in with me.

**I would like for her to be weighed and measured in my room so that I

can watch. If that is not possible, I prefer that the nurses wait until

I can accompany the baby to the nursery.

**I would like to delay eye care of the baby for as long as possible so

that she has a chance to look around and see her family.

**I would like for my daughter to be brought in as soon as

possible after the delivery. But after all stitching that may need to be

done is finished.

In the event of an emergency....

We will discuss that if the need arises but i trust my doctors ability to

handle this and to do a fine job at handling this.

In the event that i deliver a son and not a daughter (as expected) I will

only allow a circumcision if there is a local anestetic used for the

procedure.

Debbie,

I am way behind on mail and have obviously missed the whole conversation about

birth plans

but I hope you dont mind a comment. On the issue of vitamin K. I am a nursery

nurse and

we had a mom that wanted the vitamin K drops. Well our nurse educater

researched it and

found out it has to be given by a tube inserted through the baby's nose or mouth

into the

stomach. And the vitamin K has to be given more than once.(I cant remember

exactly how

many times) So this mother opted for the shot. Which only is given once.

Hope this helps you decide what to do.

a,

I read a study on the internet last night that gave the baby 2 drops of oral

vitamin K with good results not with a og tube either. My daughter got drops

and my son got nothing. The study also suggested the mother take vitamin K

orally for the last several weeks of pregnancy.

Deb,

Coming from the prespective of a nursery nurse your birth plan sounded very

reasonable to

me. I know some of our " older " nurses are against birth plans(change is hard

for some)

You could ask if you could hold her while they give the shot. We have had

people do that.

I know in our hospital if the mom wants to keep the baby all the time we let her

unless

medically indicated(baby is sick or something)

Good luck Make sure you get your birth plan to the hospital before you deliver

that way

the staff willl be aware of your wishes in advance. Also take a copy with you

to the

hospital
