HI Sue,

Welcome. ;)

Here's a link that I hope helps with your query about cytolytic vaginosis. It's very long but very informative and covers various types of vaginosis'.

http://www.ispub.com/ostia/index.php?xmlFilePath=journals/ijanp/vol6n1/vaginosis.xml

TITLE: Differentiation Of The Vaginoses-Bacterial Vaginosis, Lactobacillosis, And Cytolytic Vaginosis'

The article discusses specifics regarding the history of most vaginal

diagnoses and treatment, differentiation and treatment of the Vaginoses:

Bacterial Vaginosis--and the much less commonly known yeast 'mimics', Lactobacillosis, and Cytolytic Vaginosis.

Also here's a small clip from another article I have, this ones called Doderlein cytolysis or the Lactobacillosis mentioned above and may be very similiar if not the same disease.

"Still within the realm of infectious etiologies are other causes of vaginal discharge. One is termed lactobacillosis or Döderlein cytolysis. This entity is characterized by an overgrowth of the commensal lactobacilli hence, on saline wet mount, one finds an excessive number of bacilli among the background flora.

The pH is typically low-normal. Treatment, therefore, is directed at correcting the disruption of the vaginal ecosystem in order to limit the excessive proliferation of these protective organisms.[48] Broad-spectrum antibiotics may lower the proliferation of the lactobacilli, and alkaline (sodium bicarbonate) douches may raise the vaginal pH to restore the ecosystem. "

Here's another one by Dr. M. McKay

''A bacterial infection that may be confused with VVS is cytolytic vaginosis. In this condition there is an overgrowth of the normal lactobacilli of the vagina.

This leads to an overproduction of hydrogen peroxide resulting in a burning discomfort and pain with intercourse.

History reveals a cyclic pattern–symptoms are usually most significant in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and relieved by menses. A wet mount reveals no pathogenic organisms, an increase in the normal bacteria, cellular debris, and naked nuclei from epithelial cells.

The symptoms can be easily controlled with one or two douches in the second half of the menstrual cycle using 1 teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in one quart of water.

Cytolytic vaginosis, cyclic vulvovaginitis and recurrent yeast infection must be ruled out before a patient is diagnosed with VVS.

Other common vaginal infections should be excluded as well, but they are generally acute conditions and tend not to be confused with VVS.''

I hope those help and once again welcome.

Dee ~ ;)

New Here

Hello everyone,I'm new to the group so I guess I'll start with a little background...I've been suffering from *something* for almost three years now. None of the doctors I've seen have been able to figure it out and they all keep treating me for yeast infections which seems to be making the problem worse rather than better. Just recently my new doctor noted that I don't have a yeast infection, but rather an overgrowth of lactobacilli, very few white blood cells and that my skin cells appear to be "ripped up" looking. With these results along with the yeast infection-like symptoms, we're exploring cytolytic vaginosis.Has anyone heard of this before? And if you seem to have a yeast infection that just won't go away, this is worth exploring.I hope everyone is finding themself well :)Sue*****END OF MESSAGE/REMOVE WHEN REPLYING*****http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VulvarDisordersto search our archive or view our files.***

So would taking pro-biotics or acidophilus pills actually aggravate

this type of vaginosis? It sounds just like what I am dealing with

(the cyclical symptom during the last 10 days). I usually test

negative for yeast, but I take a difulcan now at that time - maybe I

should just take a baking soda bath!
