Garry,

Welcome!! I'm glad you have joined the list. I'm glad the method has

been successful for you so far.

As for advice on the shoes, my daughter Rose (who is now 11 months), got

her shoes when she was 7 months (I think I said 6 months previously, but

I was wrong!). It was pretty difficult getting the brace on for awhile

because she would cry and throw herself around (she still does that when

she's really tired), but she would pretty much calm down once the brace

was on. Sometimes I would have my husband put the brace on while I fed

her. Rose was also a very gassy baby, so I really sympathize with you!!

It's tough, and I hope things get better for you soon.

Garry,

Welcome!! I'm really glad you joined. My son Jakob, who will be 2

years old on February 9, has had the brace (shoes with a bar) since he

was 8 weeks old. In one sense, you should consider yourself lucky,

Jakob had to wear it 24 hours a day for the first 2 months, then nap and

bedtime, and now finally it is only bedtime. Of course, we did take it

off for baths and to dress him, but I made sure I got clothes (even

pajamas) for him that snapped all the way up his legs. It was a big

adjustment at first. In fact, the first day he had it, he " shut down "

(slept for hours on end) and when he was awake, he cried. He cried the

whole time we were putting it on or taking it off, but when it was on or

off completely, he was fine with it. You did not say whether

has both feet affected or just one foot (not that it really matters).

Keep in mind that she was used to being able to move each leg

independently and with the brace on, both legs have to move together.

Now, we can put the brace on while he's sleeping if he is in a really

good deep sleep. I know it doesn't really help, but I'm sure she will

adjust to it.

Garry,

I just finished reading 's letter. Rose wore the brace for 24

hours a day (except baths, etc.) for 3 months, also. Maybe if you keep

it on for a long period of time, it will be easier for her to

adjust to. Once Rose had it on, she didn't mind it after awhile, and I

actually liked it more I think when she had it on all the time!!

Changing it is one of the tough parts, I think. Rose learned to do so

many things with it on, and I know it didn't hinder her development at

all. Best wishes, and I hope you have success with the brace.

Joy,

I know what you mean about kids learning to do so much with the brace

on!! A couple weeks ago, Jakob stood unassisted a couple time in

his!!! I wonder how much longer until he walks in it since he can

cruise (walk holding onto things) in it.

,

I have wood floors, and Rose has learned to walk around stuff with the

brace on. Ouch! For the floors!! That is so neat that Jakob can stand

like that!! Does it make you nervous at all? With Rose, I sometimes

get nervous that the brace is just going to slide, and she's gonna go

smack!! When we started doing nap/bedtime, Rose almost seemed lost w/o

the brace! She'd look behind her to as if she was wondering where it

went!! Hehe. it was funny!

The could times he has stood in it, he was standing on carpet. He has

pushed a walker toy around on both carpet and linoleum though.

What kind of walker toy does Jakob have? My mom has a fisher price

shopping cart that she's thinking of letting Rose use.

Btw, , that was wonderful news about the doctors In New Zealand

and Australia. It is so good to hear the good stuff!

Well, I better sign off for the night and get some sleep!

Joy,

It is a Fisher Price thing. It can fold up and lay flat until kids are

ready to walk some then can unfold and be pushed along. I know they

still sell them since I have seen then recently.
