Guest guest
If you don't have the insert, you can find the info at www.rxlist.com Good site to bookmark. You put in the med...it tells you the contraindications. Guest guest
Call your doctor, ! Either way your doctor needs to know what is going on with you. Kay Metformin problems Hello everyone... I was diagnosed Type 2 April 24th (a little over a month ago). I was on 500mg Metformin twice a day for about two weeks and my doctor wasn't happy with the results so she increased the dosage to 1000mg 2x/day instead. Before she increased the dosage I had problems with diahrrea no matter if I took it before I ate, after I ate, or whenever, and with the increased dosage it's just as bad and not letting up. Just how long does it take for the side effects to subside. It's interferring with my quality of life. I can't go for a long walk, I can't be far from a restroom anytime during the day. This is getting old FAST. Another question... This weekend I suddenly came down with a high fever and horrible body aches and pains and I suppose it was the flu but I had no appetite. I took the Metformin on an empty stomach twice yesterday and all day today I've had horrible abdominal pain and cramping... like spams that reoccur about every 30 minutes with extreme nausea and sometimes diahrrea, but not always. I mean this has been since the middle of the night until now - it's still going on and this evening I decided I better eat because maybe that would help but so far it's not helping. Now is that the Metformin or flu symptoms? I don't know what's up or down anymore. Ack! Through it all however, my BG's have remained fairly stable. Does that mean 3 weeks? 3 months? There is nothing specific mentioned. I'm sure it's different depending on the person. My next doctor appointment isn't until July and I'm not going to suffer that long, that's for sure. So I'm going to simply stop taking it and see how it goes and if my numbers stay okay... if not... then I'll call her office and see if I need a new script or what she suggests I do. D. Guest guest
while metformin is supposed to be good for you it can also be dangerous. for us old times, you might remember that when originally made available it caused some major health problems. based on what the doctor has told me, plus what the hospital requires if i go in for any procedure, i do not take metformin if i am not feeling well or if i am schedule for a procedure... Guest guest
While it is true that some people have GI upset from metformin, not all people do. I had no problem with it at all when I took it. Unfortunately it didn't lower my BGs very much, either, but this was because I was later found to be LADA, not type 2, and needed insulin for good BG control. The only major health problem I know of that metformin can cause are GI problems - and those are clearly warned about on the package insert. What problems are you referring to when you say metformin can be dangerous? (When you said " for old times " I assume you meant to type " old timers " )...I do believe there's a contraindication if you have kidney or liver damage but most pills have some contraindications so this isn't strange or dangerous, either. You also said you don't take metformin if you're not feeling well or scheduled for a procedure. In order to work properly, metformin needs to be taken consistently and its effect is cumulative, so stopping it for a day for a procedure or because you're not feeling well isn't likely to accomplish anything. OTOH, if you're having a procedure you should definitely stop your aspirin a few days ahead of time. (You are taking a daily aspirin, aren't you?) Standard practice---discontinue day before or morning of operation Restart---after operation when renal function is normal My quick search didn't turn up anything about anesthesia. Go to Google and search on Metformin +anesthesia +interaction. There are lots of hits and you will undoubtedly turn up more. Sounds like a good enough reason to quit before surgery to me!!! , T2, dx'ed 4/98, controlling with LC, average bg 100mg/dl, last HbA1c 5.6%
