Jodee, welcome to the group, sorry you had to join us but you'll get good

help and support here.

With those high BGs I'm surprised your doc didn't put you in insulin

immediately.

It's much more effective in getting BGs down than pills. And since you

doubtless have been diabetic for some time with high BGs, you really should get

them

down as quickly as possible.

The goal is to get down to non-diabetic numbers. This would be around 100,

with no higher than 140 two hours after meals.

How often are you testing your BGs? And what kind of food plan are you

following?

I strongly suggest you check out the links at the bottom of this page...the

success stories as well as the suggested reading. I especially recommend the

following two books:

The first is called " Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solutions " by K.

Bernstein, M.D. It's available in hardback from Amazon for about $25, or your

local

library. Ut;s also in paperback for $8 including shipping but the paperback

is only available from Bayer. Call Bayer direct at 1- and request

Part #0441445. Their ordering lines are open 8 am - 5 pm eastern standard

time. They take Visa or MasterCard.

And here's the URL to Dr. Bernstein's website, where there's lots of good

stuff:

http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/index.shtml

Another excellent book is called

" The First Year Type Two Diabetes, An Essential Guide for the Newly

Diagnosed " by Gretchen Becker

A lot of us have gained excellent control of our BGs by lowering our carb

intake.

Dr. Bernstein goes into this in great detail, the hows as well as the whys.

Good luck, and feel free to ask any questions.

Vicki

Hi Janet,

Sorry about your hubby being diagnosed :( Right now my doctor doesn't have

me testing, he just has me taking the medication every night. I am going

back to him on the 12th and in the meantime I am to go to diabetic education

classes. He really thinks that I can control this by diet and I am sure

that I can to. I lost 74 pounds before my brain surgery so my doctor has

seen me lose weight before, I think he has confidence that I can do it again

and that it should eliminate the need for medication. He said that if I

don't take care of this that down the line we may need to start to test and

do insulin and all that nasty stuff. Hopefully it won't come to that but if

it does I want the kind of tester where you can test on your arm or leg.

HI Vicky,

I am not testing right now at all. My doctor always monitors me to make

sure that I don't have diabetes since I am so fat and it runs in my family

and this is the first time I have ever had a blood sugar problem so it

couldn't have been going on very long. I will see him again in 12 days

after having gone to diabetic education classes and he will retest my blood

sugar, go over the results of other blood work that he took today for

testing and also my 24 hour urine test we are doing. I'm sure that I can

get my sugar right back down with dieting. I will do modified low carb, ie:

meat, veggies, whole grain bread and some berries. This should bring things

back into line quickly.
